Jackie Chan's Project A

List Price: Unknown [Buy now and save at Amazon]

Review by Earl Cressey | posted June 25, 2000 | E-mail the Author

Movie:
Jackie Chan directs and stars in Project A, along with Sammo Hung (of TV's Martial Law). Chan is Sergeant Ma "Dragon" Young, a young sailor in the Hong Kong Navy during the late 19th century. The Navy is assigned to track down and capture vicious pirates that roam the coastline; however, the pirates attack them first, and the boats are destroyed. With no transportation, the Navy is reassigned as the newest police officers and go through training. On an undercover assignment to apprehend a dangerous criminal, Young is sold out by his superiors and quits the police. On his own now, he discovers that a top ranking police official is supplying the pirates with weapons, and with the help of his old friend Fei (Sammo Hung), he decides to find out who it is, and take down the pirates once and for all.

Although the DVD front cover has an image of Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung as they are now, the film was made in 1983; new fans of Jackie Chan might rent/purchase with the intent of getting the newest Jackie Chan flick, but this isn't the case. The DVD box also claims that it contains "Nonstop Action on the High Seas!" when in fact only a small portion takes place on the sea. Small nitpicks, but worth mentioning to those unfamiliar with the movie.

Picture:
Project A is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen. The film displays some noticeable grain during some scenes, as well as some shimmering. However, the most noticeable defect to the print is the almost constant flickering of the image that is quite distracting. The colors for the most part are vibrant, but occasionally they're muted, dull, and/or dark.

Sound:
Project A is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, and is quite good. The explosions and action scenes are well represented. The dialogue is clean and clear; however, the dubbing leaves a lot to be desired, although its better than most of the movies in the genre.

Extras:
For extras, Project A contains trailers for two of Jet Li's movies, the Enforcer and Fist of Legend (both full frame) that play when the disc is loaded and are also accessible from the menu. Optional English subtitles for the hearing impaired are also present.

Summary:
Jackie Chan's Project A contains his trademark style of sometimes goofy, but always great, over the top action stunts, which are the main draws of any Jackie Chan flick. The plot and story of the movie are fairly good, if not a bit convoluted. Fans of Jackie Chan or those interested will want to check this out as a rental first; with the picture lacking and no real extras, it just isn't worth the MSRP.
