The Movie:

One of the funniest comedians working today, Lewis Black combines witty observations about such topics as religion, politics and the Super Bowl halftime show with delivery that goes from mere anger to finger-pointing, stuttering fury. This "Unleashed" disc combines Black's Comedy Central efforts, including three "Presents" specials, "Daily Show" promos covering the Republican and Democratic national conventions and the "Taxed Beyond Belief" special.

Some of Black's funniest material here focuses on politics - both democrats and republicans are equal targets - but the Super Bowl material is hilarious, as Black's best comment remains, "I have N'Sync and Aerosmith on the same stageā€¦and I'm confused." A brief tirade against Starbucks is amusing, as Black believes he's found the end of the Universe in Houston, where there are two Starbucks facing each other. As for the new millennium, "Screwed again! No flying cars, no flying cars." As for Hilary Clinton running for senator, "Hello! I've seen her for eight years! Enough is enough!" As for Christmas and how it gets longer and longer, "How long does it take you people to shop?" and "When I was a kid, Halloween was Halloween and Santa wasn't poking his ass into it!"

Black's material isn't always remarkable, but it's witty and intelligent and well-written. However, it's really Black's amazing timing, delivery and controlled chaotic rage on-stage that lift nearly everything he says into the realm of hilarious. Even though he's censored on these Comedy Central programs, he's still able to come up with edgy, smart bits that don't require HBO-level language.

The DVD

VIDEO: "Unleashed" presents all of the material within in said material's original 1.33:1 full-frame aspect ratio. The picture quality is generally the same as one might find on digital cable, with clear, clean images and fine sharpness and definition. No serious flaws are noticed, with only a little bit of shimmer and a trace or two of compression artifacts present. Colors remained clean and well-saturated.

SOUND: "Unleashed" is presented in Dolby Stereo. The sound is clean and clear, with a nice balance between Black's dialogue and the audience's cheering and clapping.

EXTRAS: Black's "Convention" promos.

Final Thoughts: Black's comedy shows are superb, with great bits fueled by the comedian's hilarious, seething rage. Nearly two hours of material are offered here, all at the low price of $14.99 (and less at most stores). At that price, this gets a definite recommendation.
