DVD Savant: Elevator to the Gallows, Harlan County USA and Munich
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Elevator to the Gallows - Louis Malle's first film is a turn-of-the-screw suspense thriller that might inspire envy in Alfred Hitchcock; Harlan County, USA - Barbara Kopple's advocate docu chronicles a labor war at a Kentucky Coal mine, up close and personal; The Seven-Ups - Perhaps the best straight cops vs crooks New York crime pic of the 70s; Munich - Steven Spielberg faces a real political problem and comes up with a bitter tale of violent retribution. Easily last year's most complex Oscar contender; The Nun's Story - Fred Zinnemann's superb drama with Audrey Hepburn at her finest; Capricious Summer - an interesting comedy about some lazy romancing in a Czech village in the 1920s. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
