DVD Savant: Godzilla, Playtime and Putney Swope
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including:
Godzilla - Gojira Deluxe Collector's Edition - The Unstoppable Titan of Terror is back -- Back to Back! Classic Media gives us a quality edition of both the Japanese and American versions of the 50's original atom-smasher;
Playtime - Criterion adds an enhanced transfer, about five minutes of new footage and a great selection of extras to this retrofit of an earlier out-of-print release; Shinbone Alley - Don Marquis' "archy & mehitabel" become the subject of an animated musical, by way of a Broadway adaptation from the 1950s; The Little Shop of Horrors - This colorized re-issue of the Public Domain Little Shop has one good thing going for it -- a second good transfer of the original B&W version; Putney Swope - Robert Downey's anarchic satire on Madison Avenue uses the new ratings system to go far - way far - into uncharted territory of racial humor. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
