New Movie Reviews: Hollywoodland, Protector, and Covenant
Ben Affleck makes his triumphant return to the big screen this week in Allen Coulter's dark drama Hollywoodland. Boasting an incredibly strong cast including Affleck, Diane Lane, and Adrien Brody, Hollywoodland gets the jump on this year's L.A. whodunits by beating Brian De Palma's The Black Dahlia into theaters by one week. Also in theaters this week is The Protector - Tony Jaa's second U.S. effort is the next film in the Quentin Tarantino Presents... line; The Covenant - the film that proves Renny Harlin can still get work in Hollywood, even after directing Exorcist: The Beginning; and Idiocracy - Mike Judge's latest offering sends Luke Wilson 1,000 years into to the future where he finds he's the smartest person around. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Aurora Borealis, Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles, The Wicker Man, Crank, This Film Is Not Yet Rated, The Quiet, Lassie, Crossover, Trust the Man, Invincible, Beerfest, How To Eat Fried Worms, Bandidas, Snakes on a Plane. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films in theaters in our Movie Talk Forum Area.

TV on DVD Reviews: The Office: Season 2, Lost: Season 2 and Surface
A TON of TV on DVD releases reviewed this week including: The Office: Season 2 - surpassing the British series which inspired it, The Office truly finds its wings in this second season becoming a landmark comedy series; Lost - The Complete Second Season - at times painfully frustrating, but a show whose mythology, characters and plots are ultimately worth following; Surface - The Complete Series - a good program that ended before it should have, filled with suspense, mystery and enough action to please most Sci-Fi fans; Supernatural: The Complete First Season - if you're looking for a creepy show that has a good mixture of mystery, suspense, and horror, this is the show for you; South Park: S8 - Eight seasons in and this show just keeps getting funnier and edgier; The Tick vs. Season One - An excellent series which gets a not-so-excellent DVD release; Fraggle Rock: The Complete Second Season - a show that hasn't lost its charm as it's aged well for a nice trip back down memory lane. DVD Savant: Godzilla, Playtime and Putney Swope
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Godzilla - Gojira Deluxe Collector's Edition - The Unstoppable Titan of Terror is back -- Back to Back! Classic Media gives us a quality edition of both the Japanese and American versions of the 50's original atom-smasher; Playtime - Criterion adds an enhanced transfer, about five minutes of new footage and a great selection of extras to this retrofit of an earlier out-of-print release; Shinbone Alley - Don Marquis' "archy & mehitabel" become the subject of an animated musical, by way of a Broadway adaptation from the 1950s; The Little Shop of Horrors - This colorized re-issue of the Public Domain Little Shop has one good thing going for it -- a second good transfer of the original B&W version; Putney Swope - Robert Downey's anarchic satire on Madison Avenue uses the new ratings system to go far - way far - into uncharted territory of racial humor. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

Clip of The Week: Ryna
This week we have a clip from Lifesize Entertainment's DVD release of Ryna. Sixteen-year-old Ryna is the daughter of a poor Romanian who runs a gas station in a small community on the Donau. Ryna has been brought up as a boy because her father had longed for a son. A deeply layered coming-of-age film, Ryna is as much about strong binding family ties and a young girl's search for her identity as it is about poverty, social suppression and the abuse of power by those who rule under the guise of a false freedom. Watch a clip from Ryna - this week's Clip of The Week. (Get more information about The Ryna DVD here). Be sure to catch past week's clips at DVD Talk TV.

New DVD Reviews: X3, Lucky Number Slevin and Thank You For Smoking
Now with over 16,800 DVD reviews in the DVD Talk Review Database, it's easy to overlook some of the great reviews. Recent DVD Reviews include: X-3: X-Men - The Last Stand - Brett Ratner isn't in the same league of Brian Singer, but the X-Men franchise is strong enough to survive him; Lucky Number Slevin - a twisted, grimly funny slice of noir that builds to an emotionally satisfying climax; Thank You For Smoking - writer/director Jason Reitman teams with Aaron Eckhart to make habit-forming filmmaking in one of 2006's great films; The Devil and Daniel Johnston - an emotionally shattering journey exploring madness, love and creativity, all of which tentatively co-exist within the troubled, turbulent soul of this singular artist; Head Trauma - quiet, unassuming, and surprisingly satisfying this is a solid piece of indie horror filmmaking; The Woods - not the stellar sophomore follow up to May that Lucky McKee fans were looking for, but still worth checking out. Visit the DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.
