DVD Savant: Gojira, Billy Jack, and Wagon Master
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Gojira [Blu-ray] - Rumors of fancy new Japanese HD transfers of Toho classics gave monster fans high hopes for this new Blu-ray of the original Tokyo Stomper. Unfortunately, the earlier DVD special edition is better both for quality and extras; The Complete Billy Jack Collection - The entire Tom Laughlin Billy Jack opus biggus has been gathered into one deluxe boxed set, with multiple commentaries. Get 'em while they're half-baked: The Born Losers, Billy Jack, the deranged The Trial of Billy Jack and the Jimmy Stewart copycat Billy Jack Goes to Washington. Writer-director-star Laughlin certainly predicted today's insane political atmosphere -- there's enough faux-pacifism and paranoid alarmism here to confuse anybody; and Wagon Master - This endearing wagon train movie is one of John Ford's favorites, a gentle desert trek with an amiable hero (Ben Johnson), an independent heroine (Joanne Dru) and reels of beautiful B&W images. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
