DVD Savant: Matinee, Spartacus, and Avatar
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Matinee - Joe Dante's comedy places monster movie mogul John Goodman in Florida to premiere his latest shocker, Mant!, an occasion interrupted by excitable teens and the Cuban Missile Crisis! Great movie, aggravating disc: no extras; Spartacus - Kirk Douglas and Stanley Kubrick's intellectual, pro-revolutionary epic reaches Blu-ray in its superb 1991 restoration by Robert A. Harris. With Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton, Jean Simmons, Tony Curtis -- easily the best sword 'n' sandal film ever made; and Avatar - It's only in 2D, but this first Blu-ray of the most successful motion picture of all time looks really, really good. Savant mulls over the visual positives and the conceptual not-so-positives of James Cameron's gargantuan movie / enterprise / technical marvel. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
