DVD Talk Review Round Up
With literally thousands of DVD Reviews in the DVD Talk Review Database is easy to miss some of our top reviews. Here's quick round up of them: Wrong Turn - Eliza Dushku make the right turn in this throw back horror flick. It's no surprise Disney has gotten another DVD Talk Collector Series Rating for The Lion King. The Fan fair may not be there but Osbournes - The Second Season is worth checking out. Spoon! - The Tick: The Entire Series gets an entire review. Once a hot import Samurai Fiction makes its debut state side. Speaking of debut - John Malkovich's directing debut...we take a look at The Dancer Upstairs. Finally we're waxing nostalgic for the Eighties with The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles and Weird Science.

CineSchlock-O-Rama: The Hills Have Eyes
The excruciating wait for Wes Craven's relentless cult chiller The Hills Have Eyes proves well worthwhile thanks to Anchor Bay's hefty 2-disc special edition -- easily earning DVD Talk's highest recommendation. Eighties gem Three O'Clock High can't escape CineSchlock-O-Rama's Most Wanted either. Universal's Weird Science reissue delivers more digital boom boom. Political satire creeps into a bizarre double feature from The Godfather of Gore. Five lucky fans of R. Lee Ermey's History Channel phenom will snap to attention over this exclusive Mail Call: Best of Season One DVD giveaway. Plus, responses to reader emails and Tom Hanks' Mazes and Monsters joins the Most Wanted list.

Bad Movie Alerts
At DVD Talk we try to let you know about the best films on DVD, to that end we thought it would be helpful for you to be alerted to some of the worst so you can resist the temptation to rent or buy them: Boat Trip - proof positive that Cuba Gooding Jr's needs a new agent (also see...or rather don't see The Fighting Temptations). Speaking of bad careers gone worse there's always the latest Eddie Murphy in Daddy Daycare. Another stinker of a film now on DVD is Dreamcatcher - an absolute train wreck of a film avoid the curiosity, skip it. You might have heard the buzz about Run Ronnie Run not getting released into theaters, and there's a reason, even the film makers admit it's a stinker. Finally our DVD Savant can't even come up with one nice thing to say about More American Graffiti and he almost always can.

DVD Talk Interview: Rena Owen - Once Were Warriors & Star Wars Episode III
Once Were Warriors, a very powerful New Zealand film about domestic abuse and family heritage, has finally made an appearance on Region 1 DVD. DVD Talk Interviewer James Powell was lucky enough to sit down with one of the film's stars, Rena Owen, to discuss the film and how it effected her career. Owen, who has played roles in A.I. and the hit television series, Angel, was also kind enough to share some information about her roles in the Star Wars prequels and the sensational script of Episode III. Read our complete interview with Rena Owen

DVD Savant: White Hunter Black Heart, Images and More
This week the DVD Savant takes a look at MGM's disc of Robert Altman's Images a disc which will delight his core of fans and probably not make much of a splash elsewhere, Return of the Secaucus 7 John Sayles' first film directing effort sets his career off with a resounding success. Seven old friends, ex-activists, get together to compare lives ten years later, The Ugly American Marlon Brando takes on the Cold War in Sarkhan, only to make all the wrong moves and White Hunter, Black Heart Clint Eastwood did it all perfectly, only he needed somebody besides himself to impersonate John Huston, whose blustery, intimidating personality is necessary to make this stealth bio work. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

The Aisle View: Lost in Translation & Underworld
The Aisle View is jam-packed with new reviews this week. Topping the list is the brilliant new film Lost in Translation starring Bill Murray. In addition to a review, there is A DVD Talk Exclusive Interview with writer/ director Sofia Coppola. Also new this week: the disappointing Underworld which is gothic eye-candy and not much else. Mike Figgis' new film Cold Creek Manor isn't terrible, but it isn't the fear-fest promoted in the ad campagain. Last but not least, Cuba Gooding Jr's death spiral of a career takes another bad turn in The Fighting Temptations. Want to get The Aisle View right when it's published? Sign Up to get The Aisle View delivered free to your email box!

Finally if you SUBSCRIBE to get The Blue Room FREE via email you'll get an exclusive coupon emailed to you!!

American Pie 3x5 = Too Many American Wedding DVDs
Universal has done it again, announcing more versions of American Wedding (aka American Pie 3) than anyone can possibly keep track of (we hear no less than 5 configurations all out on January 2, 2004). For most American Pie Fans it's easy to reduce the number of releases to consider to 2: The extremely goofy titled American Wedding: Extended Party Edition (Unrated / Widescreen) and an American Wedding Gift Set which includes the 'Extended Party Edition' and a Bonus 'American Pie Revealed' DVD. Now we like the American Pie series as much as the next guy, but we're hard pressed to recommend spending $30 for the Gift Set knowing that someday somehow there's going to be yet another American Pie super ultra box set edition. Of course this is all a bit premature because no features for the 'Pies' have been announced (please no emails about this being a half baked announcement...)

Hidden Gems - Films Not To Overlook
With so many DVD releases every week it's EXTREMELY easy to overlook some of the smaller but noteworthy films. We call these DVDs 'Hidden Gems' and this week we've got a number of them for you to put on your DVD list: Jump Tomorrow - one of the best indie love stories beats the pants off any Hollywood bubble gum romantic comedy, Revolution OS - a fantastic look at the ethos of Linux, Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman fantastic but fairly unknown BBC series, Jamie Oliver: Oliver's Twist - an easy to miss release from the guy behind 'The Naked Chef', Holes a superior kid friendly flick, ignored in theaters but is a charmer on DVD, Russian Ark - 1 shot, 96 minutes, absolute poetry! Once Were Warriors a powerful film and a extremely well done DVD.

Takashi Miike's - Ichi The Killer
Media Blasters has announced the DVD release for the Director Takashi Miike's Ichi The Killer. Set for release on November 18th Ichi The Killer will be available in an unrated/uncut edition and an R Rated edtion (we'll post the full specs as soon as they are available). As with many of Takashi Miike's films (including Dead or Alive, Visitor Q Audition) Ichi The Killer is an ultra violent film and has not been widely available in it's uncut form. Check out The Trailer for Ichi The Killer (which is of course quite violent, but not as violent as this one) and Pre-order Ichi The Killer - Uncut at DVDEmpire.com.

Better The Second Time Around
It used to be that DVD fans would groan any time a studio would announce a re-release, and in the early days of DVD many re-releases we're marginal improvements over the original. Recently studios have been beefing up their re-releases into DVDs worthy a second look including: Fargo:SE with new documentaries and features Fargo fans will want to think about an upgrade, Enigma:SE - an improvement over the worst edge enhanced transfer we've ever seen, Ninja Scroll -10th Anniversary Edition - one of our favorite anime DVDs now with DTS 6.1 and in anamorphic widescreen, National Lampoon's Animal House: Double Secret Probation Edition with a new transfer and over an hour of new documentary footage it's a winner despite the goofy marketing driven name.

A lot of 'hidden gems' in this week's notable DVDs including MGM's Jump Tomorrow [Review] - probably the best indie love story you've never seen, All I Want [Review] with Elijah Wood and Mandy Moore - a quirky and overlooked film, New Line Cinema's Run Ronnie Run! [Review] - the much delayed film from the folks behind Mr. Show, Revolution OS [Review] - an extremely well done documentary of the birth development and philosophy of Linux, Columbia Tri-Star's retune of Enigma: SE [Review] - a good improvement over the initial release, and the Adam Sandler/Jack Nicholson comedy Anger Management [Review which is simply a ton of fun!

CineSchlock-O-Rama 24:Season 2 - Kim Bauer's Longest Day
About this time last year, columnist G. Noel Gross spent 24 HOURS riding shotgun with CTU agent Jack Bauer and some say he's never been the same since. Noel now files this, well, UNIQUE exploration of the SECOND season of Kiefer Sutherland's tornadic "real time" spy franchise recently released in a seven-disc, extras-packed boxed set. In a summer full of sequels, who would have thought the best one would show up in September? Well, as the saying goes, "save the best for last," and writer/ director Robert Rodriguez certainly has with the final installment of the El Mariachi series: Once Upon A Time in Mexico our featured review in this week's The Aisle View. Also film critics are jumping up and down and shouting, "Best Picture! Best Actor! Best Director!" for Matchstick Men. No, no, no, no, no. It's not all that. Nicholas Cage is great in this film. It's one of his best performances. Sam Rockwell, is also very good. But this is no best picture. Read our Complete run down of Matchstick Men. DVD Savant: You Bet Your Life, Witness for the Prosecution & Terminal Station
This week the DVD Savant takes a look at Shout! Factory's Groucho Marx You Bet Your Life The Lost Episodes, 18 never-syndicated original episodes on 3 packed discs. The shows are great and the extras terrific - including the original commercials, gag reels, outtakes, auditions and a behind-the-scenes show. Criterion shows how serious it is once again with a comparison disc of two versions of a Vittorio De Sica film, His own Terminal Station that was already crippled by the 'hands-on' contribution of producer David O. Selznick, and the retitled mess Indiscretion of an American Wife. Finally from MGM comes Witness for the Prosecution -one of Billy Wilder's more entertaining features. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

Monty Python's Meaning of Life Disc Issues
Monty Python fans have yet another reason to fret. We've received numerous reports of problems with Universal Studios Home Video's DVD release for Monty Python's The Meaning of Life: 2-Disc Collector's Edition. Apparently there are some compression issues which effect 2 out of every 5 consecutive frames, this results in a shaky or blurry image on some DVD Players (not all). This issue is being discussed at length in the DVD Talk Forum (see this thread), but no formal statement has been released from Universal. If you bought the Monty Python's The Meaning of Life: 2-Disc Collector's Edition DVD and are having issues with it, be sure to report it to Universal.

Francis Ford Coppola's next Director's Audio Commentary
Francis Ford Coppola's next "Director's Audio Commentary" has popped up in an unlikely place - A DVD companion to the latest installment of the popular literary publication McSweeney's. Although Coppola didn't have any involvement with the production on the DVD they asked him, as a 'director' to give a 'Director's Commentary'. The result is HILARIOUS as Coppola comments on footage he's never seen with long tangential tales spawning off some of the most mundane aspects of the segment. Aside from the fantastic segment with Coppola, the McSweeney's DVD is packed with goodies (running at 2 hours) including readings by this issue's author's, a take off on MTV Cribbs - "Literary Cribs", and Interview of Denis Johnson by David Eggers and much more. You can order McSweeney's Vol 11 w/ the DVD at Powells.com.

The Peerless Pantomime of Charlie Chaplin
DVD Talk Reviewer Jason Bovberg has just spent a dozen hours enjoying Charlie Chaplin's brilliant Essanay and Mutual short films, created from 1915 through 1917. Recently collected in a wonderful box set titled Charlie Chaplin Classic Short Films, the films showcase Chaplin's virtuoso silent-film pantomime, knock-down slapstick, and unique pathos. Chaplin had many imitators, but he was a true original in cinema. Check out Jason's in-depth, film-by film look at Chaplin's legacy.
