Anime Talk: Aeon Flux, Boxed Sets Galore and The Fuccons
With the holidays coming, many anime producers are releasing their back catalog in series sets. This week Anime Talk looks at some of these collections and lets you know which ones to hint for and which ones to avoid. There are capsule reviews for Aeon Flux, Those Who Hunt Elves, Kaleido Star, Requiem from the Darkness, The Robotech Protoculture Collection, and many more. DVD Savant: Adventures of Superman, The Sound of Music and Oklahoma
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Billion Dollar Brain - Michael Caine returns for a third go as Harry Palmer, workaday secret agent; The Concert for Bangladesh - The 1972 concert film looks a lot better on DVD than it did blown up to 70mm from cropped 16mm; The Sound of Music 40th Anniversary Edition - Fox's gargantuan two disc set has (finally) a good transfer of the film, along with a raft of good extras; The Fugitive Kind - Marlon Brando juggles Anna Magnani and Joanne Woodward in Tennesse William's grim allegory, out of director Sidney Lumet; Adventures of Superman The Complete First Season - Warners controls most of the various film incarnations of Superman and does affectionate justice to the show's crime-flavored first season; Oklahoma! - Fox brings out a double disc set with extensive extras on everyone's favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein musical; The Missouri Breaks - Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando chew up the sagebrush scenery quite well until Brando goes screwy on us. Silent DVD: The Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection and an interview with Suzanne Lloyd
The Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection is finally hitting DVD and Silent DVD has a look at this great collection. With this release, the last of the great silent comedians will finally have his work available on DVD. Not only does this boxed set have his most famous films like Safety Last! and The Freshman, but most of his other features are included, as well several of his shorter works. With wonderfully restored video and new orchestral scores, this is one of the best, and funniest set to be released this year. Silent DVD also has an interview with Harold's granddaughter, Suzanne Lloyd, who was instrumental in creating this set. She talks about what her grandfather was like, how he felt about his fans, and why a couple of Lloyd's features aren't included in this boxed set. Silent DVD: Unseen Cinema - Early American Avant Garde Film
Before Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack made King Kong, they made some very popular travel films. This week Silent DVD has a look at their first two films: Grass, the story of a migrant tribe in Persia, and Chang, a look at the lives of the natives of Siam. Both films are a glimpse into the past, showing a life style that no longer exists. We also have an in depth look at one of the most ambitious collections to ever be released on DVD: Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant Garde Film 1893 - 1941. This massive seven disc set features 155 unique and experimental films and does a wonderful job of tracing the origins of avant garde cinema. A must see for fans of early cinema. New HD Scaling & Region Free DVD Player Reviewed
The search for a high quality region-free DVD player has often been frustrating for movie fans with a taste for discs released outside the United States. Although there are a great many affordable region-free options available to those interested, traditionally the quality of region-free DVD players has been inferior to dedicated Region 1 units. The category of reasonably priced (under $250) region-free DVD players got a shot in the arm with the Oppo OPDV971H which despite a few quirks delivered high-end performance and is equipped with many useful features. Now DVD Talk Writer Joshua Zyber has a look at another notable entry, the NeuNeo HVD2085 which has the unique ability to play the first entry into the High Def disc space from China - HVD (High-Clearness Video Disc).
