DVD Savant: Cary Grant Box, Traffic and Lust for Life
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: The Cary Grant Box Set - Sony bulk-packages five top Cary Grant titles; The Last American Hero - Jeff Bridges is a moonshine runner who channels his aggression and skill into stock car racing; Traffic - this relevatory drama is still the most honest appraisal of our supposed "War on Drugs"; Quick Change - Bill Murray's bank-robbing clown is the laughing-on-the-inside kind. He tries to make his getaway with Geena Davis and Randy Quaid, against Jason Robards' wily police chief; Django Italo-Western Box - UK Correspondent Lee Broughton gives us the goods on the lavish Koch Media Region 2 PAL boxed set of three ersatz Django films, which we're told are of excellent quality; Lust for Life - Kirk chews the scenery with style, and Vincente Minnelli's scenery is as stylish as scenery comes in this lavish Vincent Van Gogh biopic. DVD Talk Interview: Kiyoshi Kurosawa - Director of Pulse
For audiences looking for complex and intelligent cinema, there is a growing sentiment that the films coming out of Asia are the best in the world. Filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa is on the top directors in that class, many of which are grouped together under the label "Asian Extreme". Kiyoshi Kurosawa excels in combining strong filmmaking fundamentals with storytelling, rich in themes and symbolism to produce challenging films that continue to reward even the most critical viewer. Recently, DVD Talk Writer James Emanuel Shapiro had a chance to speak with Mr. Kurosawa about several films in his filmography (including the recently released Pulse as well as Charisma, Cure, and Seance), his background, and some of his philosophies behind his filmmaking. DVD Savant: Ryan's Daughter, Johnny Belinda and Dune Extended Edition
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Ryan's Daughter - David Lean's last 70mm epic is a small-scale story made big via visual imagination and the Irish landscapes; Johnny Belinda - Jane Wyman scores a statuette for her portrayal of a deaf-mute girl in this superior and heartwarming story; Kitty Foyle - Ginger Rogers' Oscar-bait dramatic effort imagines a really tough romantic problem: Kitty has to choose between doctor James Craig or millionaire Dennis Morgan; Goto, Island of Love - Bizarro filmmaker Walerian Borowczyk's first feature continues the traditions in his celebrated short subjects. Dune Extended Edition - Universal gives us a beautiful remastered version of David Lynch's theatrical cut; Cimarron - Richard Dix and Irene Dunne brave the west in the 1889 Oklahoma land rush; Goldstein - Philip Kaufman's first feature is a self-conscious art film with a slight air of Chicago second-city humor; Pin Up Girl - Betty Grable is the whole show in this script-challenged musical comedy about a USO cutie with a naughty talent for lying. Anime Talk: Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Salaryman Kintaro
This week's Anime Talk has a look at the latest anime released including some boxed sets, a few new series, and some discs that you don't want to miss and a couple that it's best to avoid. Old school fans will want to catch the restored Super Dimension Fortress Macross, the program that was the basis for the first chapter of Robotech. It has been released once again and for the first time it has an English dub. Sundance 2006 Special: Interview with Chris Gorak - Right at Your Door
At this year's Sundance Film Festival DVD Talk Editor Geoffrey Kleinman sat down and spoke to director Chris Gorak about his film Right At Your Door which takes a look at what happens when Los Angeles gets hit by a 'dirty bomb'. Anime Talk - Area 88, Gantz and Avatar: The Last Airbender

DVD Savant: Atragon, Sabata Trilogy and Cavalcade of Comedy

Marc Connelly's plantation-folklore fable of the Old Testament is warm and spiritually honest, but it's stereotyping requires a lot of explaining; La bataille du rail (The Battle of the Rails) - Rene Clement's resistance epic shows the railroad workers of France throwing a giant monkey wrench into the path of the German war machine as liberation nears; Cavalcade of Comedy: The Paramount Comedy Series 1929-1933 - Kino assembles sixteen early talkies demonstrating Hollywood's raid of Broadway and Vaudeville stars for the new sound medium.
