New Movie Reviews: Halloween, Death Sentence, and 11th Hour
Nobody really asked for a remake of John Carpenter's classic film, but if anyone is going to do it, why not Rob Zombie with his own version of Halloween? Reactions to Zombie's "re-imagining" seem to be mostly split down the middle (some have loved it...some have hated it), but one thing is for sure...the film is causing a stir. Halloween stalks and slashes its way into theaters everywhere this weekend. Also in theaters this week is Death Sentence - Kevin Bacons stars in James Wan's latest revenge flick; The 11th Hour - Leonardo DiCaprio produced (and hosts) this startling film about the world in which we live (and often taken for granted); and War - Jet Li and Jason Statham square off in this exciting action flick. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Ladron que Roba a Ladron, Balls of Fury, Freshman Orientation, September Dawn, The Nanny Diaries, Mr. Bean's Holiday, The Last Legion, Resurrecting the Champ, The Hottest State, September Dawn, Superbad. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films in theaters in our Movie Talk Forum Area.

Max Reinhardt's production of the Shakespeare comedy is a magical delight, thanks to the fantastic contributions of the Warners' production department; 3:10 to Yuma - Sony reissues Delmer Daves' western masterpiece in time to tie-in with a new remake; The Last Cigarette - The folks who brought us The Atomic Cafe try the same approach to Big Tobacco and cigarette advertising, with (cough-cough) eye-opening results. New Movie Reviews: Nanny Diaries, Mr. Bean's Holiday, and Last Legion
It seems strange that the filmmaking team behind the excellent American Splendor chose to follow that film with The Nanny Diaries, but maybe they have aspirations of raising the film above its fluffy chick-lit-novel origins. Either way, the stunning and talented Scarlett Johansson stars in what is sure to be a hit based on the success of the book alone. The Nanny Diaries babysits your kids in theaters everywhere this weekend. Also in theaters this week is Mr. Bean's Holiday - people, apparently, still love Rowan Atkinson's 'Mr. Bean' character because he's back in theaters 10 years after the last 'Bean' film; The Last Legion - Colin Firth, Aishwarya Rai, and Ben Kingsley star in this surprisingly adventure flick; and Resurrecting the Champ - Rod Lurie directs Sam Jackson and Josh Hartnett in this moving film about a homeless man who thinks he's a former boxing champ. DVD Savant: Myrna Loy and William Powell Collection, They Live By Night & Side Street
Myrna Loy and William Powell Collection This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Myrna Loy and William Powell Collection - America's favorite romantic couple from the Golden Age appears in five tailor-made vehicles; Three Films by Hiroshi Teshigahara - Criterion showcases a Japanese master of visual moods by framing his well-known success Woman in the Dunes with interesting experimental dramas made before and after; They Live By Night & Side Street - More from the Film Noir Classic Collection Vol. 4; La Jetee & Sans Soleil - Criterion gives us two of Chris Marker's best; 20 Million Miles to Earth 50th Anniversary Edition - The 'yumpin' Ymir gets a flattering but overblown 2-disc special edition, and a humiliating colorization makeover ... approved by effects auteur Ray Harryhausen; Great African Films Vol 1: Haramuya & Faraw! Mother of the Dunes - A pair of excellent African/French co-productions. One examines the changing face of life on the street in a slum in Burkina Faso, and the second shows a harried mother finding a way to keep her family together during an economic depression in Mali. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
