New Movie Reviews: Mission: Impossible III, Hoot and The Promise
The flood of big 'summer' blockbusters begins this week with Mission: Impossible III - Alias/Lost creator J.J. Abrams takes the helm of this roller coaster spy thriller franchise with great results. For viewers looking for something a little more tame Hoot is a family treat from the mind of Carl Hiaasen with a superb soundtrack by Jimmy Buffett. The Promise is also out in limited release and is visually stunning, but lacking in substance. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Flight 93 , Akeelah and the Bee , RV , Stick it and American Dreamz. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films in theaters in our Movie Talk Forum Area.

TV on DVD Reviews: Nero Wolfe, Bob Newhart and Dr. Katz
Some great TV on DVD releases reviewed this week including: Nero Wolfe - The Complete Classic Whodunit Series - expertly crafted, masterfully acted, and unlike much of anything else on television; The Bob Newhart Show: S3 - little more than a further refinement of the strides made in season two with a few additions, reason enough to pick it up; Life Goes On: S1 - despite the occasional misstep, it is quality family television at its best; Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist: S1 - a very low tech show too funny to not check out; The Avengers '62: Complete Set - a collection that should be in every Avengers fan's library; Northern Exposure: S4 - the season this series really hit its stride; The Nanny: S2 - a modern day I Love Lucy powered by a heartfelt and wonderfully ditsy performance by Fran Drescher. DVD Savant Reviews: The Night of The Iguana and The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: The Night of the Iguana - Topnotch John Huston direction results in a terrific Tennessee Williams adaptation; The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone - A Tennessee Williams novella is the source for this strange tale; Guys and Dolls - Sam Goldwyn bent Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows' stage show out of shape but the good far outweighs the clunkiness in this tuneful, big-music musical; Creation of the Humanoids & War Between the Planets - Dark Sky's double bill gives us excellent color transfers of an indifferent Italian space opera; 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance - a stylized examination of a dozen unhappy citizens living frustrated lives of isolation, bombarded by uncaring media messages; Summer Stock - Judy Garland objects to a pack of stage people overrunning her farm, but you'll never guess that they bring out her unsuspected talents; Oyster Farmer - A thief holes up in an Australian community that raises and harvests oyster delicacies, and grows to like the river community and its colorful inhabitants. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
