New Movie Reviews: Year of the Dog, Zoo, and Condemned
Mike White (writer of Chuck & Buck and The Good Girl) makes his directorial debut with Year of the Dog. Molly Shannon, John C. Reilly, and Laura Dern lead an excellent ensemble cast in this indie film about a secretary whose life changes after her dog dies. Year of the Dog opens this weekend. Also in theaters this week is Zoo - the insanely interesting documentary about a Seattle man who died as a result of an unnatural "encounter" with a horse; The Condemned - "Stone Cold" Steve Austin stars in this latest release from WWE Films; and The Tripper - David Arquette directs this gory flick starring Jason Mewes and Jamie King. TV on DVD Reviews: The Odd Couple, MXC 2 and Tom Goes to the Mayor
A number of notable TV on DVD releases reviewed recently including: The Odd Couple - The First Season - one of the top ten funniest comedies to ever air on TV plays better today than it did over 35 years ago and snags DVD Talk's highest rating; MXC: Most Extreme Elimination Challenge Season 2 - is pure poetry -- if you like your poetry filled with perversion, scatological humor, and death and pain jokes; Drew Carey Show: Season 1 - one of the gem sitcoms from the 90's finally makes its way on to DVD and it's still a real charmer; Tom Goes to the Mayor - The Complete Series - a refreshingly insane slice of absurdist comedy; George Lopez - The Complete First and Second Seasons - a fun sitcom with lots to offer; Dogfights - The Complete Season One - awesome computer graphics of the hyper-realistic aerial combat scenes will initially blow you away. DVD Savant: Overlord, Sailor of The King and True Confessions
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Overlord - Stuart Cooper uses miles of rare wartime combat footage to tell the absorbing story of a young soldier in the first wave of the D-Day assault; Sailor of the King - A terrific war adventure pitting one man against an entire German battleship; The Purple Heart - One of the stickier examples of wartime propaganda, a film purposely designed to stir up fury for revenge; True Confessions - Roberts DeNiro and Duvall give excellent performances in a profound L.A. story of murder and corruption; Fixed Bayonets - Sam Fuller's first big-studio picture is a solid lone platoon tale with Richard Basehart and the inimitable Gene Evans; The Silent Partner - Meek bank teller Elliott Gould locks horns with psycho bank robber Christopher Plummer in the unacknowledged best thriller of 1978. This Week's Notable DVDs: The Queen, Night at The Museum and Deja Vu
An interesting mix of notable DVDs this week including: The Queen [Review] - Dame Helen Mirren breathes life and emotion into Queen Elizabeth II in an excellent film fully deserving of its myriad accolades; Night at the Museum [DVD Review - Blu-Ray Review] - this box office hit might score well with kids but it leaves adults and reviewers a little cold; Deja Vu [Review] - even in the worst of films Denzel Washington is so present and compelling you just have to watch; Other notable DVDs out this week include: 10 Items or Less, Flipper - The Original Series S1 [Review], James Cagney Collection [Review], The Lost Tomb of Jesus, Planet Earth, Starbucking [Review] and WKRP in Cincinnati S1 [Review]. Clip of The Week: La haine
This week we have several clips from Criterion's La haine. Cannes Film Festival best director winner Mathieu Kassovitz's electrifying look into the lives of three volatile young men living on the margins of society in Paris's suburbs, La haine finally comes to DVD, in a director-approved special edition.
