Silent DVD: Georges Méliès and Harry Langdon
This week Silent DVD has reviews of two top-notch DVD collections. The first is Georges Méliès: First Wizard of Cinema. This amazing set collects 173 of the
innovative directors movies, from his early actualities in 1896 through to his very last film, 1913's Voyage de la Famille Bourrichon. A truly impressive collection of
historic and entertaining films. Next up is Lost and Found: The Harry Langdon Collection. Langdon, now all but forgotten, was incredibly popular at one time and
used to pack movie houses. At his prime he was compared to Charlie Chaplin and was Mack Sennett's favorite comedian. This set of his shorts (and one feature)
illustrates why he was so popular and has some incredibly funny films. All this and more in this month's Silent DVD.
Keanu Reeves takes on the wicked ways of the LAPD in the gritty cop actioner Street Kings. The trials and tribulations of the overeducated bubble over in the Dennis Quaid dramedy Smart People. And a senior citizens choir sing the tunes of Sonic Youth and The Ramones in the documentary Young @ Heart. Also in theaters: Richard Jenkins bonds with an illegal immigrant over an African drum in The Visitor, and Hollywood offers yet another PG-13 horror remake with Prom Night. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films:
The Ruins, Nim's Island, Shine a Light, Leatherheads, My Blueberry Nights, Jellyfish, Superhero Movie, and Stop-Loss. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films In Theaters in our Movie Talk Forum.
