Over the last couple of years Undercrank Productions has released some excellent and exceedingly rare silent movies on DVD. DVD Talk's John Sinnott recently had a chance to talk with Ben Model is the driving force behind Undercrank who not only produces the discs, but also scores and provides musical accompaniment to the films. He talks about how some of these movies came to be preserved outside of film archives, the difference between scoring shorts and features, and what we can expect to see from Undercrank in the future. This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Jamaica Inn - a pristine copy of a vintage Hitchcock film about a gang of swarthy Cornwall pirates that wreck cargo ships and murder their crews for profit; Thank Your Lucky Stars - Warner's first all-star wartime ode to the troops is a comedy variety spectacular that gathers every name actor on the payroll; and Hombre - Martin Ritt directs and Paul Newman stars in an impressive adaptation of a book by Elmore Leonard, a western tale that seems a political update of Stagecoach. Check out these new titles: Leviathan [review] - Andrey Zvyagintsev's haunting and spellbinding film is a somber tale built on hopelessness and palpable anger towards the establishment; It! The Terror from Beyond Space [review] - a sharply written, well-crafted collision of horror and science fiction and this Blu-ray release presents one of the 50's most extraordinary genre efforts in its theatrical aspect ratio for the first time; and Extremities [review] - a tense morality play in which Farah Fawcett plays a sexual assault victim that turns the tables on her attacker. Heads up, classic game fans! Mark Bussler of the influential and popular online series Classic Game Room just released a 15th Anniversary collection of his favorite reviews and moments from the show on Blu-ray and DVD. Loaded with nearly five hours of content, plus a full-length audio commentary featuring original CGR co-host David Crosson, it's a must-have for fans of all ages! Mark recently chatted with DVD Talk reviewer Randy Miller III about the show's early days in 1999, his years as a filmmaker, laserdiscs, relaunching CGR in 2008, his international fans, the Blu-ray and DVD's hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, drawing comics, life aboard the Intergalactic Space Arcade...and, of course, his lifelong love and respect for classic and contemporary video games.
