TV on DVD: South Park, Lucifer, and Psycho IV
South Park: Season 19 Some great TV shows have made their way onto home video recently including: South Park: Season 19 - the decision to ditch self-contained episodes for serialization pays off big as this season delivers the smartest, funniest, and most consistent batch of episodes to date; Lucifer: The Complete First Season - a genuinely fascinating character played with massive charm by Tom Ellis is shoehorned into a pretty pedestrian police procedural; and Psycho IV: The Beginning - not half bad for a made-for-television sequel to an Alfred Hitchcock classic… the film is enjoyable with strong performances from Anthony Perkins, CCH Pounder and Olivia Hussey. This Week's Notable Releases: Now You See Me 2, Equals, and Night Train to Munich
Now You See Me 2 Another banner week for home video with the studios releasing some great films and boxed sets such as: Now You See Me 2 - not very different from the first film in terms of its construction or concept but the new additions to the cast and enjoyable new set pieces help it avoid feeling like a retread; Equals - a complicated story about love and loss, bolstered by a cool dystopian premise; and Night Train to Munich: Criterion Collection - Carol Reed's espionage thriller has a certain charm to it...not to mention striking cinematography and several fine performances. New Reviews: Van Gogh, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, and Mad Tiger
Van Gogh (The Films of Maurice Pialat: Volume 3) Some cool discs have been reviewed over the past week. Check out these recent entries: Van Gogh (The Films of Maurice Pialat: Volume 3) - Maurice Pialat's excellent 1991 film does not attempt to squeeze its subject into a typical biopic mold; instead, it uses slice-of-life vignettes to conjure the famous painter as a flesh-and-blood man; Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia: Encore Edition - Fans of Sam Peckinpah should make a point of picking up this Blu-ray release... it's a fantastic package a solid A/V presentation and a wealth of terrific supplements, including a new audio commentary; and Mad Tiger - the best Behind-the-Music docu ever... about a band you probably don't know.
