Greetings! Savant's new reviews today are

Dumbo  Disney DVD
Beyond the Law & The Grand Duel
and Pistoleros
 Wild East
By Lee Broughton

and
Loving Couples  New Yorker / Project X

Along with his reviews today, Lee Broughton offers this note about a BBC screening the other night: Apparently there's more evidence that the Master of Suspense was a naughty boy.

"The BBC have been screening some interesting stuff about early British cinema this last week. There was a fairly decent docu called Shepperton Babylon that showed how a lot of continental stars had their voices dubbed when talkies came along by simply having an English actor standed off camera speaking their lines while they silently mouthed them. Some of this kind of dubbing was really effective. Also a bit about Alfred Hitchcock included in the same show. I'd read in passing that the guy was a bit of a sleaze but they actually had footage of him screen-testing an actress and the test involved him repeatedly trying to lift her skirt when she clearly didn't want him to. Other footage had him clearly taking delight in verbally tormenting and confusing another actress. Pretty disturbing stuff. Some great clips shown from forgotten Brit films from the 30s and 40s that are clearly well off the radar of most of the populace these days (Brit TV doesn't like screening black and white movies much any more). Hope some of these make it to DVD some day."

Thanks Lee.

Gary Teetzel passes on the good news that Warners has acquired all of the old Max Fleischer Popeye and Superman cartoons, and we'll start seeing them soon. It's great news because they'll be restored; I've seen so many bad copies of the terrific Superman cartoons that I'd almost given up on them.

I just saw the new Criterion disc of Equinox and really enjoyed it. My review won't be up until closer to street date, but if you're anxious DVD Talk already has an Equinox review up by Bill Gibron that you might like! Thanks for reading ... Glenn Erickson
