Review by Daniel W. Kelly | posted November 29, 2004 | E-mail the Author
The Movie:
Dangerous Seductress is a rather tame horror schlockfest about a voluptuous blonde possessed by the spirit of a witch who seduces then kills men. So just how tame is this film for lovers of sex and gore?

The Story:
Susan (Tonya Offer) has a really sexy boyfriend, who gives her a gorgeous ring—and then basically rapes her while punching her senseless. So she takes off to Japan to stay with her sister Linda (Kristin Anin), a model who soon heads to Bali to do a photo shoot, leaving Susan alone. Within minutes, Susan reads a spell from a book she finds, and awakens an immortal enchantress of men (Amy Weber) who possesses Susan's body so she can go out to clubs and pick up guys to have sex with and then kill. At the same time, Linda has her own side story. She witnessed a car accident that involved a group of thieves, so a detective is now spying on her home—but of course, she's in Bali doing a photo shoot, so the detective is about to get into deep trouble with her twisted sister.

Dangerous Seductress has a pretty straightforward plot. The acting is bad, and the sex and nudity are a letdown. In fact, the naked women are all well-endowed, but there's always a bolt of lightning shooting from their nipples, so you don't see much. There's just a slight amount of thong action. The special effects are actually quite impressive for the most part, but at other times, when the effects are bad, they're really bad. Good or bad effects, there is definitely more to please gore hounds than sex hounds. There's also way too much filler used to squeeze out a full length feature. There are numerous scenes of people dancing at clubs, which sometimes run 2 minutes or more. When Susan first becomes possessed, there's a ridiculous "fashion show" of her trying on slutty outfits from her sister's closet. There are also a couple of photo shoots of her sister in Bali. And then we also get to watch Susan play pool in order to pick up a guy. There's some hokey fun and makeup effects, and from a technical viewpoint, a pretty seasoned director creating some nice visuals. Still, this isn't so much of a crowd pleaser, just pure silliness.

The DVD

Video:
The movie is given an anamorphic widescreen transfer with an aspect ratio of 1:85:1. There's quite a bit of dust and dirt on the print. There's also inconsistency with both colors and blacks. At times, the color seems bland, and then all of sudden, it's oversaturated. The blacks are the same—sometimes dark and deep, at other times, they lean towards a gray scale. And overall, the image is soft around the edges.

Sound:
The Dolby 2.0 stereo track offers loud & clear audio, with fine attention given to left/right separation. There's also a deep, rumbling bass to accompany the sound.

Extras:
This DVD release has quite a bit of extras:

INTERVIEW WITH DIRECTOR H. TJUT DJALIL—this 15 minute interview is presented in full-frame which didn't adjust to my widescreen TV, so there were black bars on the left and right sides of the TV. There's an overdubbed translator repeating what the director says. Djalil pretty much offers a resume of his career before discussing the making of this movie. He also discusses the moviemaking business in his home of Indonesia.

INTERVIEW WITH SFX GURU STEVE PROUTY—same full-frame issue as above. The American special effects man discusses how he ended up working on this project in Indonesia, and fills us in on the big American films he's done since.

INDO EXPLOITATION —text pages describing the Indonesian movie market and history, repeating quite a bit of info discussed in the director interview.

H. TJUT DJALIL FILMOGRAPHY—3 text pages chronicling the director's films.

SFX COMMENTARY—Steve Prouty gives commentary on the special effects work of just the four minute opening clip of the movie.

MORE FROM MONDO MACABRO—this is streamed clips of about 12 releases by the DVD company, set to music.

Final Thoughts:
Dangerous Seductress appears to be a sex-filled horror schlock flick, but it just doesn't payoff in the end—there are some sexy women—we just never seen enough of their bodies. The story is simple and filled with unnecessary scenes to stretch it to a full length feature. And the special effects and gore range from impressive to real cheesy. This one's just not a compelling enough bad film to sit through even for the fun of it.
