The Movie:

As has been reported in various articles and on shows in recent months, the internet has become somewhat of another "distributor", with many websites geared towards finding an audience for inventive low-budget short films. Some of the more famous have been pictures like "George Lucas In Love". After reading about the short film and waiting to finally see it, the end result is funny, but not enormously so. The plot revolves around a young, college-age George Lucas, who finds himself with writers block. In several scenes, we see the events that went on to inspire him to write. The acting is enjoyable, and several references are amusing, but it ends rather quickly, and honestly, didn't leave as much of an impression on me as another short that was included on this same disc.

I actually found "Film Club" more entertaining. A hilarious parody of "Fight Club", the short revolves around a group of independent filmmakers who join together and create their own rules. The humor about the industry is sharply written and the acting is really strong, delivering the humor perfectly. The other two shorts here are pretty funny as well; "Evil Hill" is a mix of telling how "Austin Powers"'s Dr. Evil character started with "Notting Hill". "Swing Blade" is a mix of "Swingers" and "Sling Blade". All 4 films are very good, but "Film Club" remains my favorite.

The DVD

AUDIO/VIDEO: The video quality for all 4 films varies a bit; "Film Club" and "Swing Blade" look a bit rougher than the other two films. "Evil Hill" looks particularly great, with excellent sharpness and detail. "Evil" and "George" have strong, rich colors and look great. Although these are certainly low-budget shorts, they generally look pleasing. Audio is really nothing too remarkable for the four films, which are presented in Dolby 2.0 and get the job done.

MENUS:: Menus are nicely animated with the theme music in the background. Before the menu there is a long ad for mediatrip.com, but thankfully this can be skipped by hitting the menu button.

EXTRAS: There are some good extras included with the "George Lucas In Love" section. First is a commentary from the directors, which is fun and somewhat informative about the making of the film. The commentary can be "combined" with the "enhanced" version of the film, which is sort of like VH-1's "Pop-Up Video" series, where little pictures pop up with subtitles that give us more information about the movie. Also included is a "making of" documentary, where the crew talks about their inspirations and ideas that came up during the process of thinking up the plot, which included a very different writer as the first subject. The documentary really should inspire film students who want to share their vision with others. There is also a little bonus feature, but you need a code that can be found at the DVD site for the film, which is located here.

Final Thoughts: "Lucas" is very good; "Film Club" is wonderfully sharp and funny and "Evil Hill" is pretty amusing. "Swing Blade" is sorta funny. The price is a little much at 45 minutes for $14.99, but if you can find it for less the disc is definitely worth picking up.
