Teaching Mrs. Tingle
I'm still surprised how much I disliked Teaching Mrs. Tingle. Even though they are not great works of cinema, I have enjoyed some of Kevin Williamson previous films (especially his sharp scripts for the Scream series). In Teaching Mrs. Tingle Williamson forgets the most important element of a dark comedy - we need to care about the characters! One of the more mean spirited movies I've seen in a while Teaching Mrs. Tingle fails as both a comedy and thriller and ends up being sensely and aimlessly mean.
The Picture
It's a shame that this movie is so bad, Buena Vista did an excellent job with the film transfer on the DVD with 16X9 enhancement. I was actually frustrated that this movie looked so good on our wide screen TV while some of the other releases from Buena Vista really don't compare.
The Sound
One of the first DVD's to have both a Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 soundtrack on the same DVD, Teaching Mrs. Tingle is a really good sounding movie. I really enjoyed the rich tonality of the DTS track as well as the real clear 5.1 Dolby Digital. Again it was frustrating to see such a poor movie get such great technical treatment.
Extras
Teaching Mrs. Tingle is completely devoid of any extras. I was surprised that it didn't even have talent bios (something that I think every DVD should have, at a minimum). It would have been interesting to hear Kevin Williamson's take on his first directing job but there are no commentaries on the DVD.
Conclusion
Don't waste your time on Teaching Mrs. Tingle, I watched it knowing full well that it didn't get good reviews and even with greatly lowered expectations I was very disappointed.
