The Movies:

Seattle based smut peddlers Something Weird Video continue their tradition of releasing triple features of oddball exploitation cinema in solid and attractive DVD releases. Classics of rough and tumble and slap and tickle like the Findlay's The Flesh Trilogy or The Olga Trilogy are must own discs for any fan of this type of material, but 2005 was a bit of a weaker year for the company in the eyes of a lot of their fans. Thankfully, things seem to be back on track with this latest trio of trash films, and while they can't all be winners, there's definitely enough of merit to peak the interest of roughie fans around the globe.

The Ultimate Degenerate:

Directed by the late Michael Findlay under the pseudonym of Julian Marsh and co-produced with his wife Roberta, this one also stars Michael in the lead role as a creepy pervert named Spencer. Just like in the Flesh Trilogy that he also directed and starred in, Findlay's character is stuck in a wheel chair and none too happy about it. He's got some money, however, and he spends it by hiring hookers to come to his house where he shoots them up with love drugs and makes them perform for his pleasure.

One night, a lesbian lady of the evening named Maria ditches her playmate and finds a notice in the newspaper that offers to pay good for just the type of skills she's got. She soon finds herself working for a living in Spencer's basement by way his assistant Bruno (who she wastes no time bedding) alongside a bevy of other beauties all wearing nothing but their birthday suits. The girls dance and gyrate quite a bit, to the tune of some go-go music, while employing whipped crème, ropes, cameras, fire and corncobs into their act, much to Spencer's enjoyment.

After Spencer has gotten what he wanted out of the hooker and her new co-workers he lets his other side out for the night, torturing the gals with electrified sex toys and he's got eyes on taking her down next!

Sleazy, sexist, dirty and depraved, The Ultimate Degenerate lives up to its name in true Findlay fashion. It has a fair bit in common with the better-known and better-made Flesh Trilogy to be sure but it is more or less its own animal. Findlay amps up the lesbian encounters in this one and adds a whole lot of non-stop bumping and grinding which substitutes thrills and sleazy kicks for a real plot. The movie is more or less softcore shenanigans and doesn't really get 'rough' until pretty close to the end so in that manner it might prove disappointing to those looking for a little more violence to go alongside their naked ladies prowling about the basement in black bras and high top panties, but for those who enjoy go-go dancing and nudie girls, this one definitely delivers.

The Lusting Hours:

Beginning with a dictionary definition of the word 'lust' up there on the big screen, this one starts off with a bang as we lay witness to the mating ritual that takes place between a man and a woman. We soon realize that this movie is pretending to be a serious documentary exposing the reality of sexual relations, but it's pretty hard to not giggle your way through the parade of perverts that John Amero and Lem Amero dig up to fornicate in front of the lens.

The narration attempts to give it all some sort of context but it isn't nearly as successful as the man reading the script tries to make it sound and really, this all comes off as nothing more than cheap exploitation, a flimsy excuse to show people doing weird things with and to one another – just as it should be!

We witness a woman in a belly dancer costume and her cloaked assistant put on a show wherein she fondles some sheer cloth, we see wild parties with sparklers and dancers and we see a woman strip and then gyrate on stage near the hot looking lights that compliment her fine female form. Women pose for a photographer who shoots provocative pictures of them in lingerie and sometimes not even that much, while a pair of odd-looking lesbians have hot passionate softcore sex with one another in a barren hotel room. A woman dances with a whip, a man gets a massage from an exotic oriental beauty, and then a woman is bound and whipped with a cat o' nine tails. Two gay men get down and dirty in a different barren looking hotel room, and then a man is dominated by a spike-heeled woman in a black widow corset.

Some nice period inner city footage from the New York City of the era adds some atmosphere and charm to the film; watch for 42nd St. and the Latin Quarter towards the end of the movie. There really doesn't seem to be much of a point to any of it but if playing voyeur to the private acts of sexual deviants is your cup of tea, then drink up, as The Lusting Hours delivers. Watch for a lovely looking Roberta Findlay and a not so lovely looking Michael Findlay in small roles.

In Hot Blood:

Joel Landwehr's 1968 ode to big young breasts, In Hot Blood, tells the story of a young woman named Rita who happens to have quite the pair of titanic ta-ta's strapped to her chest. She moves to the big city and tries to start a life of her own there, and soon she finds her true calling as a fashion model, a job which will make use of her more obvious features and bring in the dough she needs to get set up.

Soon Rita is spending a lot of time getting in and out of clothes with and around the other models that she works with, as well as practicing some of her other skills on a banana or two. You see, whether she realizes it or not, Rita has fallen in with a bunch of dirty free loving hippies and they're obviously having no trouble at all bringing her into their orgiastic world of sex and carnality. Things get more depraved as Rita finds out that these cats are into whips and chains. You'd think that this type of behavior might clue the poor girl in to the fact that things are heading downhill fast, but no, she's into it.

Lots of poorly light and mostly out of focus fondling, bumping, grinding and humping kills the next twenty minutes or so before one of the girls that Rita works with doses up on acid and has a bad trip, forcing Rita to fight for her life and then flee what she thought was her new happy home. Rita isn't going to get off so easily, however (at least not as easily as she was getting off) as this girl is pretty pissed off and happens to have a meat clever handily stashed in her purse with Rita's name written all over it.

Much goofier than it is titillating, In Hot Blood fills its frame with earthy looking women and scruffy looking men in some of the most unconvincing sex ever filmed. No one seems particularity into their kinks, which makes all the whipping, flailing, and screwing seem more or less for naught. That being said, the movie is definitely dumb enough to work and it does have that great inner city sleaze vibe going for it that makes it completely watchable. It's the weakest of the three movies on this disc, but it's still enjoyable enough and a decent dirty time waster.

The DVD

Video:

Each of these three black and white bad boys was shot fullframe and that's exactly how they're presented on this triple feature DVD. While the bit rate isn't through the roof with three films crammed on here, this trilogy of trash looks surprisingly good. Contrast levels are set nicely and the prints used for the transfer appear to have been in pretty decent shape as, although there is some mild print damage here and there, the picture is quite clean considering these were shot fast and cheap way back when. Mpeg compression artifacts are pretty much a non-issue and while there are a few instances of edge enhancement and line shimmering, there aren't a whole lot of digital conversion problems to report.

Sound:

The Dolby Digital Mono sound mixes are pretty clear considering the low budget origins of the three older exploitation films presented on this DVD. While the limitations of the technology used to capture the audio shine through and the material does show its age with some mild hiss and the odd pop here and there, you aren't going to have any problems following the dialogue. As seems to be more often than not the case with a lot of this material, some of the swanky background music used throughout the three films might just make you wanna get up move as its pretty catchy stuff.

Extras:

With three features slapped onto one disc, there isn't a lot of space left for extra features but Something Weird has supplied one trailer a piece for each of the three movies here. Also carried over from a couple of past releases is the Gallery Of Sick Sixties Sex Stills which is essentially a slideshow set to music. When it comes to extra features more is almost always merrier, but in the interests of video quality it's perfectly understandable that this release isn't stacked with supplements.

Final Thoughts:

A strong release from start to finish, The Ultimate Degenerate/The Lusting Hours/In Hot Blood is recommended for those with a taste for vintage exploitation movie making. The extras are light but the movies all look and sound quite good, and with three features for under twenty bucks, this one earns itself an easy recommendation!
