Beyond Suspicion

Movie:
Beyond Suspicion, originally titled "Auggie Rose," was filmed in the latter part of 2000 as a made for TV film. The film was written and directed by Matthew Tabak. The film stars Jeff Goldblum (John Nolan) and Anne Heche (Lucy Brown), with Nancy Travis, Timothy Olyphant, and Kim Coates in supporting roles.

John Nolan is a successful insurance salesman whose life changes dramatically one evening when he goes to purchase wine. While there, the store is held up and the robber shoots the clerk, Auggie Rose. Nolan stays with Rose until help arrives and feeling some responsibility, accompanies him to the hospital. Unfortunately, he doesn't make it. The police are unable to find a next-of-kin, so Nolan takes it upon himself to locate one. However, his search only turns up a pen pal, Lucy, that Rose had while he was in jail. Nolan feels that he should meet Lucy, who arrives in town that week, and tell her what happened. When he meets her though, he decides to become Rose and take on his lifeā€¦but what consequences will that have?

Beyond Suspicion is a film that looked promising: the story sounded interesting and I enjoy performances by Jeff Goldblum. However, the film was rather disappointing in the fact that not a whole lot interesting or exciting happened. The film moves rather slowly throughout its 109 minute running time and never really builds to anything. This is mainly Goldblum's film and his performance was quite good, but I think Heche's left something to be desired. And who would give up Nancy Travis (Goldblum's girlfriend of six years in the film) for Anne Heche?

Picture:
Beyond Suspicion is presented in 1.85:1 non-anamorphic widescreen. The transfer is solid and crisp throughout, showing a remarkable degree of detail. However, it also has some visible edge enhancement in a few scenes, which is rather distracting. A few marks and specks are also visible. Colors are well saturated and vibrant throughout, with accurate flesh tones and deep blacks.

Sound:
Beyond Suspicion is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 in English and Dolby Surround 2.0 in English and French. Surrounds are used mainly for ambient noise and the film's score. The track really doesn't employ much directionality, though it is used a few times for effects. Dialogue throughout the film is crisp and clean with no distortion that I could detect. Optional subtitles are available in English and Spanish.

Extras:
Beyond Suspicion has not one, but two audio commentaries. The first features Tabak and Goldblum, while the second features Tabak and Daniel Stone, a producer. Of the two, I preferred the first, as I found it to be the more interesting of the two. Tabak and Goldblum (though mainly Tabak) discuss numerous areas of the film, including the characters, how certain scenes were shot, and some behind the scenes stories. The second commentary is mainly focused on the production side of filming the movie. Also on the disc are behind the scenes interviews with Tabak, Goldblum, Heche, Stone, and Rhodes, in which they discuss the film. Mixed in with some behind the scenes footage, the total running time is three minutes and thirty seconds. There are also cast and crew biographies for Goldblum, Heche, Olyphant, Travis, Coates, Tabak, and Stone & Rhodes (together). Also included is an alternate ending for the film and the promotional trailer for the film on VHS or DVD, presented in full frame.

Summary:
Fox has put together a decent DVD for Beyond Suspicion, though the film itself is rather disappointing. For fans of the actors involved, especially Goldblum, the film is worth a look, but I'd rent before purchasing. Rent it.
