Willie Nelson: Live in Amsterdam

The Movie:
This is the opening date from Willie Nelson's 2000 European Tour, offering an exciting and highly entertaining concert from the supremely talented musician. Where many of these concert presentations are an hour or so, Nelson plays for nearly two hours and goes through many of his biggest hits, including: Whiskey River/Stay All Night, Good Hearted Woman, Funny How Time Slips Away, Crazy/Night Life, Help Me Make It Thru Night, Fast Train to Georgia, Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, Blue Skies, Georgia on My Mind, All of Me, Stardust, Me and Paul, The Gypsy, If You Got the Money, My Bucket Has a Hole In It/Jambalaya, Walkin' the Floor Over You, Vous and Moi, 7 Spanish Angels, City of New Orleans, To All the Girls I Loved Before/Luckenbach/Whiskey River (Revisited), Still is Still Movin' to Me, Milk Cow Blues, Pancho and Lefty, Till I Gain Control, Mama Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboy, Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground, On the Road Again, Always on My Mind, I Never Cared For You, Please Dont Talk About Me When Gone, Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms.
It's a wonderful performance and, presented here by Image Entertainment with strong audio/video quality, it's a definite must for fans of the singer.
The DVD
VIDEO: Although Image Entertainment is not always able to deliver an anamorphic widescreen edition for their concert releases, their full-frame editions are almost always exceptionally good. "Live in Amsterdam" is definitely no exception to this as the picture looked, with the exception of a few minor flaws here and there, remarkably good. Sharpess and detail were both very impressive during many of the sequences; some of the farther, wide shots did contain a bit of softness, but I was impressed by how much detail the closer shots contained.
Again, there were only a few minor flaws and they certainly were not very distracting. A slight bit of shimmering was apparent once or twice, and there were one or two minimal traces of pixelation, but that's it. This is, for the majority,a very clean and very well-defined image with strong colors. The layer change is between songs at 57:45.
SOUND: "Live In Amsterdam" is presented in Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1, as with many Image Entertainment concert presentations. For those who do not have either Dolby Digital or DTS, there is an additional 2.0 track, but it of course pales in comparison to the surround presentations. The way that the music is presented is a simple, but effective way of positioning. The vocals are spread out across the front three speakers along with the music. Surrounds do kick in some re-inforcement and crowd noise during the show as well, although there are some occasions where they seemed silent.
It may not be quite as "dynamic" as some of the other recent concert presentations, but it works quite well for the subdued, relaxed material. It's a nice, natural and convincing "front row" feel that worked for me throughout. Audio quality also was splendid throughout the concert, as the music was able to be heard clearly and crisply. The DTS version of the presentation did add a slight additional clarity to the music; the guitar playing seemed to sound more natural. Nelson's vocals came through quite well as they were carried with fine presence and perfect volume by the front three speakers.
MENUS:: When Image Entertainment goes all out for their animated menus, they really do a terrific job. The menus contain a clip from the show in the background and some very nice animation.
EXTRAS:: Unfortunately, nada.
Final Thoughts: Audio and video quality are outstanding, but for the majority they are quite good, if not excellent. Although it's unfortunate that there aren't any supplements, this is still a very entertaining concert that goes through a pretty lengthy list of the singer's more popular tunes. Recommended.
