The Movie:
When "Mystery Science Theater 3000" ended its run in 1999, everyone thought that was the end. There was a slight possibility of another channel picking up the show or maybe another movie being released, but nothing ever came to fruition. Thanks to the wonders of DVD, Mike Nelson (who is also doing new commentaries for the online Rifftrax site), Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett reunited to create a direct-to-dvd "MST3K" like series titled "The Film Crew," in which they provide commentary tracks for truly terrible films. The latest and greatest release ("Wild Women Of Wongo") is on par with some of the funniest episodes of "MST3K."

The story of "Wild Women Of Wongo": Until encountering a man from the tribe Goona, the attractive women of Wongo were unaware that other men existed thanks to the powers of Mother Nature. You see, the men of Wongo are rough looking brutes and the men of Goona are attractive. Naturally, the women of Wongo have their sights set on the Goona men. When the women of Wongo believe that the men of Wongo were killed by the brutal ape-men, they travel to Goona to find their mates. When the men of Wongo learn this, they are none too pleased.

Since "Wild Women Of Wongo" is filled with the worst line deliveries ever uttered, blue haired people, and a yappy parrot who is everywhere at once, the Film Crew has no problem ripping into this trashy semi-S&M-ish movie. One of the benefits of these DVDs is that Mike, Bill, and Kevin can be a bit more R-rated. No, they don't simply spout profanities. They do, however, make clever sexual innuendoes that are often times the most memorable bits. In addition, the crew does a great job of pointing out how the characters in the film resemble the likes of Mr. Burns from "The Simpsons," Bam-Bam from the Flintstones," and Cher.

The host segments are solid, but nowhere near the level of "MST3K" segments. The opening finds the Film Crew freezing their butts off in the basement. They get a call from Bob Honcho, who is out and about with a tribal group, who wants the gang to do a commentary for the "Wild Women Of Wongo. The lunch break (which takes place halfway through the movie) has Kevin Murphy pulling out a fictional map (which he believes is real) of where Wongo lies. This is the highlight of the 3 segments as the map contains geeky references to places like Tatooine, Middle Earth, etc. The closing piece involves Bill demonstrating a machine that reveals who a person's ideal mate is.

Overall, I know a lot of people prefer the days of Joel Hodgson and Trace Beaulieu doing riffs, but to me, Mike, Bill, and Kevin were a funnier and more consistent riffing group. They always seemed to be having more fun, plus they have great chemistry together. I am glad they are overjoyed that these 3 are doing "The Film Crew" commentary tracks. But who knows, maybe guests like Joel will join them in future releases.

The DVD

Video:
While the segment scenes with the Film Crew are crisp and clear, the film print itself contains scratches galore. However, you don't buy these disks because of the quality of the bad films. You buy them for the commentary.

Sound: As with all "Film Crew" and "Mystery Science Theater 3000" disks, the sound is uneven. The commentary itself is clear enough, but the audio from the movie is so low that you really have to crank the stereo to 11 in order to hear it.

Extras: A few extras here. There are previews for "The Film Crew" DVDs, "Zach Galifianakis: Live At The Purple Onion," and "Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story." Also included are 2 laugh out loud spoofs from 2 particular scenes of the movie titled "Make Film Crew Dance" and "Goodbye, Wongo Style."

Final Thoughts:
"Wild Women Of Wongo" is the most gut bustingly funny Film Crew release to date. Buy this disk now so that we may see more Film Crew disks in the future.
