Summary: A compilation of some of U2's music video hits between 1990-2000. Although many of the songs themselves are memorable, classic rock hits with great lyrics and catchy tunes, the videos themselves are also worthy of praise, as the band has worked with some of the most highly regarded video directors over the years to create inventive, inspired visual representations of their songs.

The DVD

VIDEO: The videos are presented in 1.33:1 full-frame and look surprisingly strong. Sharpness and detail - aside from a few moments here and there - look quite stellar, with fine detail often apparent. Little in the way of problems were noticed - aside from the intentional grain in some of the videos, there weren't any noticable artifacts or print flaws. Of course, colors varied throughout the videos (some of the videos are also black & white), but never seemed problematic.

SOUND: I was a little disapointed to find that the DVD does not include 5.1 remixes of any of the videos. Instead, the videos are presented in PCM 2.0. Still, these soundtracks made for fairly immersive and enjoyable listening when Pro Logic II was enabled, while audio quality was very pleasing. Instrumentals were impressively clear and natural sounding, while Bono's vocals were forward and strong in the mix.

EXTRAS: Most of the music videos have a commentary from the director. Although I'm not sure I expected much information from these short discussions, I couldn't have been more wrong. Directors like Anton Corbijn, Phil Joanou and others provide intelligent, informative and remarkably insightful commentary about the making of each of these videos. All of them clearly state their concepts and intentions for their vision (Jake Scott talks about trying to find his vision for "Staring at the Sun" while the band was also trying to figure where they were heading) of the video and how they approached the production (Stephane Sednaoui's discussion of not knowing what he was going for while an entourage of 40 people followed him around during the "Mysterious Ways" shoot is fascinating). Some of them criticize aspects of their work (director Kevin Godley's embarassment at the opening of the "Even Better Than The Real Thing" is funny and Phil Joanou talks about an unhappy U2 who weren't pleased at filming a video at 5am) and provide enjoyable discussion of what they think they would do differently.

In addition, three short featurettes ("The Story of One", "Missing Sarajevo" and "U2: Sur Mer") are also included.

Final Thoughts: Although the videos and songs are terrific, there are some flaws with this set, such as the fact that the bonus DVD should have been offered with this set and the menus on this set are rather irritating, with animations that are too lengthy. Still, audio/video quality is good and fans looking for more information on the videos should enjoy the commentaries.
