Honeymoon In Vegas
The "Honeymoon in Vegas" DVD was recently released by MGM, the same company that has recently done a fantastic job with the Second James Bond Box Set and "The World Is Not Enough." Knowing what great treatment these other DVD's received, I was excited that as fun a movie as Honeymoon in Vegas was coming to DVD. Apparently, however, MGM spent all their time with the Bond movies, and virtually no time on this DVD. While the film itself was still as enjoyable as I remember it, watching the DVD was a somewhat frustrating experience.
The Picture The film is offered solely in the Pan & Scan mode, and the picture quality suffers as a result. While not a bad transfer, no attempt to clean up and sharpen the picture for DVD release is evident. Perhaps we are spoiled by the great number of releases with widescreen or anamorphic projection and picture excellence, but the picture was not up to the same standards.
The Sound Likewise, the film is not offered in 5.1 Dolby Digital, but merely Dolby Digital 2.0. While the film is mostly dialogue driven, there are a number of songs in the film. The sound is not bad, but again, it does not necessarily appear up to the current standards of DVD release.
The Menu The menu is fairly straightforward, the viewer has few choices and the choices presented are easy to navigate. The menu does have little parachuting Elvises, which are an amusing touch, however, if a viewer has not yet seen the film, it would probably be better that they were left as a surprise.
The Extras This is the area where the DVD's deficiencies are most disappointing. Because this film is an extremely fun one, I was hoping that there would be something good. While Cage and Parker have become even bigger stars and might not be available to do a cast commentary, I felt that the film deserved some decent extras. The preview is pretty enjoyable, but is filled with spoilers, so it is best to watch after the film. The film soundtrack contained Elvis Songs covered by a pretty impressive list of musicians...Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and Bono. Perhaps a couple of music videos might even make this film worth owning. With a lack of extras and sound and video transfers which are generally below what many viewers have come to expect from video, I would advise against purchasing it unless you are a big fan of the film. It is a fun movie, and worth a rent for anyone who hasn't seen it before, or hasn't watched it in years, but otherwise, Skip it.
