Blown Away

The Movie:
Jeff Bridges plays a Boston bomb expert and Tommy Lee Jones plays the terrorist making his life a nightmare in "Blown Away", an unremarkable thriller from director Stephen Hopkins("Ghost and the Darkness") that has a few entertaining moments, but also has a lot of slow moments. I can appreciate that this was attempted to be more of a character drama, but it doesn't manage to really engage the audience.
Bridges plays Jimmy Dove, a bomb squad expert who is the one always called in when things go wrong. But when a terrorist named Gheraty(Tommy Lee Jones) arrives in the area and starts setting off explosives, things get progressively worse. I enjoyed the storyline that was developed into the film to make it more than just the usual action film, but it needs work on pacing, which drags frequently.
Still, the performance from Bridges is excellent. With his work here and in Peter Weir's "Fearless", it's really unfortunate that Bridges does not get more major roles. I liked "Blown Away", but I would have liked for it to be more consistently intense than it is.
The DVD
VIDEO: An early work from MGM, this is still a pretty impressive work, with only a few small problems that are worth noting. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, the picture is clear and crisp, although occasionally looking the slightest bit soft in an area or two. Other than that, sharpness is not an issue and looks good. Colors are warm and rich, although in a handful of scenes they seem to be intentionally a little bit on the subdued side. Flesh tones are very good and black level is solid as well.
The picture stumbles in a few sequences, with some minor pixelation and shimmering, but for the most part, this is a pretty remarkable looking image for an early title from the studio. There are a few small marks and scratches on the print used, but like the other flaws, they don't take away terribly from the overall look of the movie.
SOUND: The soundtrack offered on "Blown Away" is an excellent surround sound presentation; although it could have even been more enveloping during some of the non-action moments, the film still becomes agressive during the more intense moments, offering some very effective use of the surrounds. Bass also makes a deep impact during some of the bigger action moments. The musical score also sounds very clear and crisp, and dialogue is clear, as well. A few minor instances where it could have been even a little more agressive, but still, this is a very entertaining soundtrack for a movie that was made in 1994.
MENUS:: A very basic menu just taking the cover art and using it for the main menu. .
EXTRAS:: Unfortunately, just a small booklet and the film's wild theatrical trailer.
Final Thoughts: The picture quality has a few minor slip-ups, but is otherwise ok. Sound quality is excellent, but unfortunately, the disc is pretty lacking in extra features. A rental.
