She's a brilliant R&B singer, selling millions of albums and winning converts with her oddball voice and expressive lyrics.

She also really, really likes herself, as A Day in the Life of Macy Gray shows.

A Day in the Life of Macy Gray is as the title would indicate. The camera follows Ms. Gray to Tower Records, to Sunset Blvd., shops on Melrose and her home in the San Fernando Valley. She talks with her friends, with restaurant cashiers and with crazy people. Lance Bass of N'Sync makes a guest appearance (he falls in one of the preceding three categories).

Gray is the type of artist who needs to buy a second airplane ticket for her ego. It takes that kind of ego to release a 75-minute disc that, for much of the running time, just shows her walking around and talking to people - often about herself. She spends a lot of time shopping, as well - for CDs, for cars and in Las Vegas with a radio contest winner. It's hard to imagine any of this being of interest to even the most devoted, hardcore Gray fans.

Sonme gems:

On Vegas - "It's like a big group of a lot of people."

On Universal CityWalk (Los Angeles tourist spot) - "It's got a bunch of people, a bunch of cars, a bunch of stores, shops, trees, grass, boneheads, and beautiful people such as myself."

On Sunset Strip - "Anything can happen at anytime." (NOTE: Gray proceeds to walk around the Strip ... and nothing happens.)

There are some quasi-insightful moments during A Day in the Life of Macy Gray. Gray spends some time just talking to the camera and is usually more compelling then, when there's seemingly no pressure to "do something interesting." She's also funny on a couple of occasions, including the opening bit where she walks around Tower Records and complains that everyone from Mariah Carey to David Bowie is copying her hairstyle. The final major segment shows the inner workings of an audition session for a touring drummer for Gray's band. That's the type of behind-the-scenes material that is interesting, not which stores she likes.

But while there are fleeting moments of interest, it certainly is not worth sifting through 75 minutes of material.

(NOTE: The DVD features Gray singing exactly zero times.)

The DVD
Video:

A Day in the Life of Macy Gray is a straightforward full screen presentation, pretty clearly shot in digital video. The transfer is clean, although the shadows cast by Gray's ridiculous-sized hats can be dark to the point of losing all definition on her face.

Sound:

This disc is basically a 75-minute interview, but it comes with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS tracks, along with a straightforward 2.0 mix. Would the question "Why?" be out of order here?

Extras:

None. Come on, can't we get a music video? Gray singing something in the public domain? Anything?

Final Thoughts:

It's hard to imagine who would enjoy A Day in the Life of Macy Gray. How many hardcore fans of a singer would enjoy 75 minutes of said singer not singing? How many want to see a favorite musician buying furniture, or talking to crazy people? If that's your gig, then check out A Day in the Life of Macy Gray. Otherwise, there's no reason to watch this definition of a "vanity project."
