The Show
If you will, compare George Carlin and Andrew Dice Clay. Both have shows that you couldn't watch with your grandmother, and both are well-known successful comedians. But Dice's comedy career lasted approximately four years in the spotlight, while Carlin's continues today after four decades of making people laugh. The reason? Behind Carlin's dirty mouth lies real genius for comedy. Behind Dice's filthy talk is a lot of nothing.

With that in mind, I present "Mo'Nique: One Night Stand," featuring one of UPN's biggest stars, in terms of popularity and size. Like Dice, her show features more cursing than a month's worth of Def Comedy Jams. If they tried to edit it down for TV, it would consist of her saying "Hello" and "Good night", with 59 minutes of bleeping between them. She uses the F-word like it's the way she breathes. I started to count how many times she curses, but I ran out of fingers and toes quickly.

Sweating like she's in a sauna, Mo'Nique covers topics including her ex-husband, being a "big girl," "Rugrats," farting secretly and her children. Her act in seeped in stereotypes right from the beginning, which is particularly disturbing when she talks about her kids, expressing a preference for her womanizing, fighting older child, versus her inquisitive, nature-loving young son. Like Dice, she knows her audience (here, a crowd in Biloxi, Mississippi), and she plays to them.

My wife laughed a few times watching this disc, but it did nothing for me. Due to its overwhelming presence, the overtly coarse language seems to be the act, with the comedy actually serving as filler until the next profane outburst. I've never been a big fan of dirty comics, like Sam Kinison and Dice, and Mo'Nique's not much different from them. Take away the obscenity, and there's not much left to laugh at.

The DVD
The show is presented full-screen on one DVD, with animated menus that feature short clips of the show. On the menus, there are "scene" selection options and menus listing the available previews. There are no subtitles or alternate audio tracks.

The Quality
The full-screen video presentation is very solid, which is impressive considering the bold red dress Mo'Nique wears. This could have been a serious problem, as bright red can cause bleeds. The background is dark, which makes her stand out clearly.

There's not much to talk about in regards to the sound, with two primary sources, Mo'Nique and the audience. Both are reproduced well, with the comedy heard clearly.

The Extras

The extras are limited here, with the only add-ons being a collection of previews from the rest of the Platinum Comedy Series releases.

The Wrap-Up
Mo'Nique's comedy, like that of Larry the Cable Guy, is aimed at a specific audience, and those who aren't squarely in that camp won't get much entertainment from it. If you're a fan of "The Parkers" or the rest of the Platinum Comedy Series, you might have some fun with this disc. But considering the paucity of content, I can only recommend a rental.
