Review by Matt Langdon | posted August 17, 2004 | E-mail the Author
Masques is an enjoyable French genre mystery by French film auteur Claude Chabrol.

Philippe Noiret plays Christian Legagneur a charming but creepy TV game show host who has been administering a sinister plot against his goddaughter to get millions of her inheritence dollars. Enter Roland Wolf (Robin Renucci) a biography writer who comes to stay for a long weekend at Christian's mansion in the country to conduct a few hours of interviews.

While Roland is there the goddaughter (Anne Brochet) falls in love with him. She is an over-medicated neurotic young woman who has been manipulated and browbeat for so long she is afraid to move. Roland has a plan to help get her fortune back and help her gain he freedom. But he has to play along with Christian for a while so he won't be detected. Along the way various characters come and go adding mystery and fun to the film.

The film is tongue-in-cheek most of the way and at times plays like a Hitchcock type comedy. The acting is good, the script is comical clever and fun.

Video:
The DVD is presented in 1.66:1 and looks excellent. The colors are bright, the image is sharp and there is no detectable artifact. The image has been enhanced for 16 x 9 televisions.

Audio:
Audio is nothing special in monaural but it sounds good.

Extras:
There is one trailer on the DVD. There is a good essay by Guy Austin and a full Chabrol filmography in the DVD's insert sheet.

Overall:
Masques is a rather by-the-numbers film by Claude Chabrol but it is well directed and rather enjoyable nonetheless. The DVD looks great.
