The Movie:

It is too bad that there isn't a larger market for short films.  Creating a 10 minute movie is a good way for young filmmakers to learn their craft, and one good joke can carry a short.  Like The Chub Chubs and Troops, Peep Show is a funny short film that knows not to carry the joke too far.

Fern is a woman who goes to a seedy peep show in order fulfill a desire that she can't get satisfied in her life.  After paying for her admission, she sits in a small booth decorated with red curtains and plastic flowers that has a slot in the wall.  When she puts money into the slot, the curtain goes up and she gets to see, not Chippendale's dancers, but a pair of good looking guys being sensitive and caring.   They talk about their feelings.  They are willing to stop and ask directions, and their idea of a perfect date is to go shoe shopping followed up by some cuddling.  Of course, when the curtain goes down the guys laugh at how silly and unrealistic the lines they are spouting are, but they are selling a fantasy, not reality.

This short is a very funny look at desire and the differences between men and women.  They manage to reverse the roles perfectly, which is where a lot of the humor comes from.  This was shown on HBO fairly frequently a few years ago, and I managed to catch it there a couple of times, and I'm glad that it is finally available on DVD.

The DVD:

This film comes all by itself on a bare bones DVD.  I was surprised that there weren't any other short films or extras included on this release, not even a commentary by the creators.  With a run time of under 10 minutes and a retail price of $9.95, (and any on-line discounts being eaten up by shipping in most cases,) I can't help thinking of a number of quality full length movies that can be had for the same price.  Columbia Tri-Star really missed the boat with this release by not making Peep Show be the main attraction on a release containing several shorts.

Audio/Video:

The two channel audio was good with the dialog being clear and no defects present.  Likewise the widescreen image, unfortunately not anamorphically enhanced, is very good, with no major problems and digital defects being nonexistent.

The Extras:

Unfortunately, the only extras are a few trailers.

Final Thoughts:

Peep Show is a great short and belongs in many people's movie library.  Unfortunately, I really can't recommend buying the disc due to the lack of  extras or other shorts on the DVD.  $10 for less than 10 minutes of film is just a little too much, even if the film is as good as Peep Show.  I do recommend that you go out of your way to see it though, since it is a riot.  Make sure you Rent it.
