Powerpuff Girls: Powerpuff Bluff, The

Sugar...spice...and everything nice. These were the ingredients chosen to create the perfect little girl. But Professor Utonium accidentally added an extra ingredient to the concoction -- Chemical X. Thus, the Powerpuff Girls were born! Using their ultra superpowers, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup have dedicated their lives to fighting crime and the forces of evil!
The ten episodes included on "Powerpuff Bluff", one of the first two compilations of Powerpuff Girls episodes on DVD, are...
Video: Since the animation style used in the Powerpuff Girls is pretty clean and simple, I wasn't expecting much difference in the quality of the full-frame video, but the disc is noticeably sharper. Not a huge difference, but enough to get very high marks. The only episode that doesn't look quite as good is "Bare Facts", and even then, it's just the scenes of the girls talking to the Mayor (not the fantasy sequences) that aren't up to the quality of the remainder of the disc.
Audio: A marked improvement over the broadcast versions. The Dolby Surround Stereo track is much fuller and richer than what I've heard on cable, and the bass packs a much bigger punch in particular.
Supplements: The snapper case lists an extra cartoon, an episode of "Courage the Cowardly Dog", but instead, my disc had the first episode of "Sheep In The Big City" (around 22 minutes). There's also a play on the typical cast/crew bios, with brief descriptions of Blosson, Bubbles, and Buttercup. The DVD-ROM portion includes three games and a trivia challenge.
Conclusion: "The Powerpuff Girls" is probably the best animated program on television right now, and two of the ten episodes on the "Powerpuff Bluff" collection were nominated for Emmys. It's hard to look at a very reasonably priced compilation of so many great episodes presented in such high quality and not give it a collector series rating. Go out and buy both Powerpuff Girls discs right now. Now.
Although this may be a sort of odd compliment to make, I really liked the fact that selecting "play all" only went through the opening sequence once. Very nice use of branching.

- Cat Man Do: After stopping a feline-obsessed James Bond style villain, the girls take in his abandoned kitty, with dire consequences!
- Uh-Oh...Dynamo: The Professor worries about the girls fighting giant monsters, so he works tirelessly to create Powerpuff D.Y.N.A.M.O., 'cause to effectively combat giant monsters, you need a heroic giant robot...
- Mr. Mojo's Rising: The origin of the Powerpuff Girls' arch-nemesis, Mojo Jojo, and Mojo tricks the Professor into giving him superpowers.
- Powerpuff Bluff: Three Powerpuff Girls impersonators wreak havoc in Townsville.
- Bubblevicious: In this Emmy nominated episode, Bubbles sets out to prove that she's just as tough as her sisters.
- Monkey See, Doggy Do: Mojo Jojo uses stolen jewels to turn the citizens of Townsville into dogs.
- Telephonies: The Gangrene Gang sends prank calls to the Powerpuff Girls, sending them on fake missions.
- Mommy Fearest: The lonely professor thinks he's finally found his one true love, but she's not quite as sweet and loveable as she appears.
- Mime For A Change: After an accident with a truck full o' bleach, Rainbow the Clown becomes the villainous Mr. Mime, robbing Townsville of its color.
- Bare Facts: The second Emmy nominated episode on this disc, the Mayor gets kidnapped by Mojo Jojo and is blindfolded when the Powerpuff Girls rescue him. He asks the girls what happened, and each of them tells the Mayor very different versions of what happened...
