The Show:

The last half of Nurse Witch Komugi is even more off the wall than the first volume.  The last three episodes of this OVA series include more parodies of everything from Speed Racer to Dragon Ball to Thunderbirds and more.  They even manage to work in a parody of my favorite parody show, Excel Saga.  A hilarious end to a fun series.

"Komugi is really dead."  Unfortunately, Komugi gets hit by a bus in the first episode on this DVD, and spends most of the episode dead.   Not all of it of course, she does get better.  But then she dies again.  And again. Yes, it's a running gag, but I laughed each time.  Since her coworkers don't really miss her (they complain about how stupid she was during her funeral) the dead Komugi decides to haunt them.  But when Koyori appears and Komugi realizes that she can't turn into a nurse witch, she has to find a way to come back to life.

The next episode has Komugi turning into a pro wrestler, Muscle Cuite.  She becomes so popular that Pioneer offers to let her star in an anime.  When it turns out that the writer hasn't finished the script (he actually only has a tentative title) the director quits and Komugi is elected to direct the show, with predictable results.  The premier party where Koyori attacks and transports Komugi into an anime show was wonderfully bizarre.

In the last episode, a new villain arises, and Koyori and Komugi have to join forces to fight a super-powered teacher from another planet.

All three of these shows were laugh out loud funny.  They were all filled with amusing references to other anime shows and it didn't take itself, or anything else, seriously.  In the first show for example, Komugi and her sidekick get transformed into a computer generated version of Speed Racer barreling down the road in the Mach Five.  "Oh no!  We turned into polygon art!" Komugi exclaims.

If you enjoy irreverent and off the wall humor, this series is right up your alley.  This volume definitely had more laughs than the first, pretty much throwing out most of the plot to make room for more oddness.  As enjoyable as Excel Saga, this is a very funny, if short, series.

The DVD:

This DVD presents the final three episodes of this series on a single disc that comes in a white Amaray case with an insert.

Audio:

The viewer has the choice of viewing this program in either a 5.1 English dub or in the original Japanese in stereo. I watched the show with both tracks, and like them equally.  The full soundstage was used very effectively in the dub track, with a lot of group sounds and even some dialog coming from the rear speakers.  The audio sounded clear on both tracks without any his or distortion. There are optional full English subtitles or just subtitles for the signs and song lyrics.

Video:

Being a recent production, the full frame video looked pretty good. The lines were tight and sharp, and the colors clear. There was some minor aliasing, with the diagonal lines having a stair step effect, but this is common with animated shows.  A fine looking disc with only minimal defects.

Extras:

This disc also has some extras that are thankfully becoming standard on ADV discs.  In addition to a clean opening and closing, there's a five minute reel of production sketches, several Japanese TV spots advertising the series, and a series of previews.

There was also a commentary with the director, Scott McClennen, and voice actresses Luci Christian and Kira Vincent-Davis.  Like the commentary track on the first disc, this was a good commentary, with the people talking about the show and anime, without having the 'party' atmosphere that many anime commentaries take on.  I enjoyed it a lot.

Final Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this show and its "anything goes" feeling.  As where the first volume pretty was mainly a parody of magical girl anime, these episodes throw caution to the wind and lampoon everything they can.  A delightfully funny series.   Highly Recommended.
