Title: R.O.D.: TV Series Volume Three - The Past

Body of Review: The Three Sisters Agency has another mission, we find out about their past, and they have to rescue a friend all in the third volume of R. O. D. the TV. This volume continues the fun and excitement that the previous two DVDs were filled with.

This volume starts off with a fun action story, then has a couple of warm and touching shows before ending with a bang. I've really enjoyed this show, but the surprises in the second half of this volume have me counting the days until the next volume is released. A show that has a good mixture of adventure, comedy and a little light drama thrown in, R. O. D. the TV is a nice fun show.

Episode 9 : Heart of Darkeness
The Three Sisters Agency are hired by Dokusensha to find a rare book before others can obtain it. On this mission, they run into Nenene who is attending a reunion, and she tags along, much against the sisters wishes. This episode is a little darker than most, with a serious battle at the end that takes a surprising turn. A good stand alone episode that may have interesting repercussions.

Episode 10 : Christmas Carol
This was the show I've been waiting for. The episode has the origin of the three sisters; how they got together and a little about what they were doing before the adopted each other. A really interesting show.

Episode 11 : Goodbye Japan
With Nenene working on her book and making good progress, he publisher decides that she doesn't need bodyguards anymore and fires the Three Sisters Agency. They have five days to wrap up their business in Japan and then they have to head back to Hong Kong. Anita is really torn up about it since she's just starting to make friends, and can't stand to leave them. A very touching show with a shocking cliffhanger ending.

Episode 12 : Twilight of the Papers
In an astounding turn of events, Nenene has been kidnaped, and it's up to the sisters to find and rescue her. The first part isn't too difficult, but the second brings a unique set of problems when the sisters encounter another Paper Master.

The DVD:

Extras: This disc includes the Japanese previews for the episodes presented on the disc, an art gallery, and some trailers. There is also a commentary track on episode twelve by the ADR director and the Johnathon Kline English language producer. This was a pretty interesting track. They explained a lot about the technical side of producing anime; they talk about various choices that are made in the course of producing a show and some of the problems that crop up. A great commentary for those interested in the nuts and bolts of anime production. (They also fixed the problem they had with the audio levels on last volume's commentary.)

Included in the case (of the first printings at least) is a limited edition pencil board.

Video: Being a recent program, the video quality was for this episode was very good. The full frame video had bright colors and excellent detail. You could clearly see the steam rising from the morning coffee, and discern the strands of hair trailing behind the women as they ran. There was some aliasing in the picture, a little more than I'd like, but it didn't distract from my enjoyment of the show. I was very pleased with the way this show looked.

Audio: This DVD has the original language track in stereo and in 5.1 also. Usually the Japanese track doesn't get the multi-track treatment. There is also an English dub in 5.1. I viewed the disc listening to both 5.1 soundtracks, and I had a slight preference for the Japanese audio. The main thing I had against the English track was that Anita, being a young girl, had a high-pitched voice that was whiney and irritating. I'm getting more used to it as the show goes on though. The other voices sounded appropriate. On both tracks, the rear channels were used to very good effect, with effects and voices coming from all corners of the room.

Final Thoughts: Just when you thought you knew what to expect from this series, they add a new villain and throw in some surprises. There is still a good amount of mystery to the show and the main plot progresses nicely in this volume. A series that most anime fans can enjoy, this DVD is Highly Recommended.
