The Movie

You've most likely never heard of Unstoppable and with good reason. It really isn't that great of a film. The story is about a former Special Ops soldier, Dean Cage who ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. The bad guys think that he knows something that he really doesn't know. Unfortunately for Cage, they drug him with a mind controlling hallucinogen that leaves him susceptible to suggestion. Once on the drug, he believes just about anything anyone tells him. Overall, what really hurts this movie are the somewhat acceptable performances, the mediocre storyline, and the lack of entertaining action.

Our main character is Wesley Snipes (Blade) as Dean Cage and starring aside him is Jacqueline Obradors (NYPD Blue) as Amy. Now Snipes' performance was decent. I don't really think that the movie gave him a true chance to shine. For instance in films like Blade he comes off as a real badass action hero. In this film, he really wasn't much of an action hero. However, it wasn't really Snipes' character that threw me off, but rather Obradors'. She takes a rather overzealous approach, which was defined by her role. Obradors plays Amy, who is a very close friend of Snipes' character. As a result, when Snipes gets into trouble, Amy pretty much goes crazy to save/help him. This Amy character just came off very annoying. In addition to the main characters, a few of the supporting roles tended to be a little over the top and some were even pointless.

Another major aspect that I did not like about this movie was the actual story. It seemed to be pretty weak. After it was introduced, there was very little development. Essentially we get to see some pretty bad dialogue and a few semi-entertaining fights scenes. Furthermore, the storyline tends to be pretty predictable. It really isn't hard to tell how the movie is going to flow and what's going to happen next. Overall, the story doesn't have very much to offer viewers.

Finally, one major aspect of this movie seemed fairly light. I think that the focus on action should have been developed upon further. I just wasn't very impressed with the fight scenes. It left me feeling somewhat cheated. That is one of the things I really like about Snipes, seeing him kick some ass. While he does kick some ass in this movie, the fight scenes are generally short and unrealistic.

Overall, this movie did not have a lot to offer. The storyline was pretty lackluster and the characters weren't very impressive. I tend to like Snipes, in movies like White Man Can't Jump or Blade, but unfortunately, Unstoppable was far from an acceptable movie. I suppose if you are really interested in seeing another Snipes movie, check it out. Otherwise, I wouldn't come near this movie.

The DVD

Video:
The video in this release is given in 1.85:1 ratio widescreen color. The picture quality is pretty good, with a very sharp and clean picture. There are some traces of grain and a few compression artifacts, which are apparent during the darker scenes of the movie.

Audio:
The audio in this release is given in two formats, English & French 5.1 Dolby digital surround sound and Spanish 2.0 Dolby digital stereo sound. The audio tracks provide a clean sound, which is very audible. The dialogue is fairly flat, but sound effects are fairly rich and vibrant. There is some pretty good distinction between audio channels, but the majority comes from the forward channels. There are also subtitles in French. The DVD box claims it has English subtitles, but it most certainly does not. The feature is also closed captioned enabled.

Extras:
There are no extras with this release. However, if you consider movie trailers exciting extras, you're in luck! There are trailers for Unstoppable, Renegade, Sniper 3, Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchio, and Wake of Death.

Final Thoughts:
Unstoppable is a pretty bad movie in many respects. It fails to provide a decent storyline to attract viewers and it doesn't have any characters that are really likeable. In addition, the bad movie isn't supplemented with great ass kickin' action, but rather short unfulfilling fight scenes. I really didn't enjoy the movie and I don't think it is worth recommending.
