The Movie:

Seka. She's one of those celebrities who are cool enough to get by with just one name, like Sting or Cher, but on an entirely different level than those two altogether. She was the platinum princess of porn, the blonde goddess of filth, and a natural beauty with plenty of skill in front of the camera.

Since retiring from the porno world, Seka has more or less lead a quiet life and when this documentary was made, she's been out of the public eye for a little while despite the fact that her fan based had not diminished since her hey days in the mid eighties. After starring in such adult classics as Inside Seka, Beyond Desire and Dracula Sucks she was on of porndom's most instantly recognizable starlets and the subject of many a man's (and probably many a woman's) fantasy.

Fast forward twenty years and a trio of young Swedish men who grew up on Seka's films are setting out to track her down – and that there is the concept behind Desperately Seeking Seka. The film begins with a brief overview of the porn industry. The basically give us a run down and inform us that a lot of people buy porn and that it is in fact very big business. If you didn't already know this going in, they prove it by interviewing a few girls at the AVNs in Las Vegas (where butt plugs are explained). Once that's over with, it gets back on track and such industry notables as Veronica Hart and Al Goldstein are interviewed on Seka. Veronica Hart proves to be the most interesting part of the film, she's a classy lady with a good head on her shoulders and she speaks of her early days in the business and how Seka looked out for her a little bit during those more naïve times. Peter North, Ashlyn Gere, Nina Hartley and a few other notable names from the industry are also on hand to give their thoughts on Seka and her work.

Eventually our intrepid documentarians find the subject of their affection living in Chicago, Illinois. They contact her, and she agrees to an on camera interview, which in turn makes up the last half of the movie. They interview Seka, forty-seven years old at the time of filming, in her home in the windy city where she cooks for them (!) and talks about her life in front of and behind the camera.

Notable topics covered in the interview include how she got into the business (she ran an adult bookstore and one day decided that she'd be a good porn starlet – so she went for it!), John Holmes's intimidating super-schlong, and how she turned the tables on porn's dirtiest star, Jamie Gillis (the enema bandit himself!). Seka comes across as quite sincere in her love for what she did. She's not apologetic in the least (nor should she be) and she concludes that she lived her life her way and did everything on her own terms. While the delivery is a little dry and I honestly think that the interviewers could have posed some more interesting questions than they did, overall it's a reasonably interesting session and it's impressive to see her be as upfront and honest about everything as she is in this interview.

While she admits that her best days are behind her (she openly admits she quit the business because she was 'too old'), Seka will likely always have a solid fan base. As classic porn becomes more popular thanks for documentaries like this one, Pornstar – The Legend Of Ron Jeremy, Inside Deep Throat, and Exhausted and big time Hollywood films that tackle the subject matter like Boogie Nights and Wonderland, more and more people are likely to find out about her and seek out her work, and this documentary is a nice companion piece to her hardcore films of the past..

The DVD

Video:

The 1.66.1 widescreen image is not enhanced for anamorphic television sets but is of pretty decent quality overall for a cheap documentary that was shot on video. Colors are quite bright and the image is stable in that it doesn't break down or pixilate at all. There is some very mild compression evident in a couple of scenes as well as some mild edge enhancement but other than that, flesh tones look quite nice and natural and the picture is perfectly watchable.

Sound:

You can watch the film in its original Dolby Digital 2.0 English track or dubbed into a Dolby Digital 2.0 Swedish track if you so choose. There are a few spots where the questions that the interviewer is asking are slightly muffled sounding and obscured a little bit by some of the ambient noise, but most of the time the film sounds just fine. A 2.0 mix does the trick nicely and quite honestly doing anything fancier with the audio really would have been overkill anyway.

Optional subtitles are available in English, French, German, Spanish and Swedish.

Extras:

Fist up is a commentary track with Magnus Paulsson and Christian Hallman, the two producers/directors of the film. It's an interesting track, as they wax nostalgic about shooting the film and interacting with the celebrities that they were able to nail down on camera for interviews. It's isn't exactly full of mind blowing information or anything like that, but there are a few fun anecdotes about the time that they spent filming at the AVNs, as well as the actual interview with Seka herself.

Aside from the commentary, there are thirteen deleted interview clips, most of which are from the Seka interview, and they cover subjects as varied as Club Magazine, Ron Jeremy's self fellating abilities, working with John Holmes, porno film fans, and specific films like Ultra Flesh and more. There are also clips with Randy West and Scott Taylor in here as well. There are also nine deleted scenes included in this section as well, that include clips with Nina Hartley and Jane Hamilton as well as chunks of information on films like Princess Seka and Dracula Sucks.

Next up are a selection of extended interviews. These are the same interviews that were used in the film, just longer versions of them. They're presented here unedited and in their complete form. Appearing in these interviews are Al Goldstein, Seka, Jane Hamilton, Nina Hartley, Peter North, John Leslie, Scott Taylor, Serenity and Ashlyn Gere.

Also included on the DVD are four pages of production notes, a photo gallery of behind the scenes shots from the making of the documentary as well as some vintage nudes of Seka, an extensive Seka filmography, biographies on the filmmakers themselves, a trailer for Desperately Seeking Seka, a small gallery of Desperately Seeking Seka promotional material, some DVD-Rom exclusive wall paper, DVD production credits, and four outtakes from the film (including a goofy bit with Al Goldstein on Ron Jeremy).

Final Thoughts:

Desperately Seeking Seka is a moderately interesting (though far from fascinating) look at the life of one of porndom's most iconic performers. It takes a while to really get on topic, but even when it's meandering, it's still interesting. Disinformation's DVD release looks and sounds just fine considering the low budget of the film, and it's packed with extra features. Recommended.
