THE GOODBYE GIRL

Synopsis:

Paula McFadden (Marsha Mason) woke one morning to find that her lover had not only flown the coop from New York to San Francisco but, he'd sub let the apartment they shared to another actor, Elliott Garfield (Richard Dreyfeuss). Now faced with homelessness for herself and her daughter, Paula is willing to do whatever it takes to live in harmony with Elliott. That is until he chants with bells at 6am sleeps in the buff and eats all manner of "natural" thing out of her very own dishes. The real problem has nothing to do with all those cursory issues, it's actually her attempt to deal with the feelings she's starting to have for Elliott and she's just not ready to allow her heart that kind of liberty yet, given her last excursions with actors. Essentially, she's tired of being the "Goodbye Girl". Elliott's in a bind as well. The second greatest literary work ever, Richard The III, is opening in a few days and the director wants him to play the title role but as a flaming homosexual resplendent in flowing lavender robes and a kitschy "hairdresser" accent. Greatly displeased at this turn of theatrical events, Elliott is trying his best to appease the director and save his career from the ruin, this portrayal will surely send it to. In the midst of all this chaos, two people are searching for true love and have found each other. The Goodbye Girl is a warm and funny beautiful movie about the search for love in all but one of the wrong places!

Audio/Video

The audio for the feature is presented in mono. Thusly, all of the action comes from the center. It's kind of reminiscent of watching the film on TV with the only sound coming from the TV's speakers!

Video-wise, the film's imagery is clean but obviously dated. In some of the darker scenes, the resultant haze from the rain (last chapter) blurs the image and makes it a bit hard to discern some of the images. Other than that the film's images were bright and clean. Both a widescreen and full frame version of the films is included however for the purpose of the review, only the widescreen version was reviewed.

Extras:

There are no extras on the disc.

Overall:

Richard Dreyfeuss is one of those actors that you either love or hate. I happen to love him to death and have enjoyed him in most of his films. The Goodbye Girl is easily one of his best works! It's no wonder that he got an Academy Award for this film! Marsha Mason is perfect and compliments him to a "T". TGG is a wonderfully romantic movie that is rich and warm and a joy to experience! Highly Recommended
