Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino
If it were a movie, few would believe it to be a plot grounded in reality, nevertheless in 2004 it happened: after an 86-year drought and nearly losing the playoffs, the Boston Red Sox came back to win it all and become champions of the world - exorcising a long-believed curse stemmed from the Twenties. Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino is a lighthearted, occasionally emotional look at the team that just couldn't catch a break for over eight decades and the magical postseason that finally wiped away the endless stain of defeat.
Narrated by Liev Schrieber and featuring interviews with a host of Red Sox fans both famous (Michael Chiklis, Denis Leary, Jeffrey Lyons, Steven Wright, Lenny Clarke and Mike O'Malley) and not-so-famous, Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino traces the history of the bitter New York Yankees/Red Sox rivalry, which has its roots in the infamous sale of Babe Ruth from Boston to New York by then-owner Harry Frazee. This defining moment in the franchise's history has haunted them - or perhaps not - over the ensuing years, guaranteeing that the Red Sox are perennial losers and cannot claim the crown, no matter how close they come.
Originally filmed after the crushing loss of the 2003 playoffs, the filmmakers returned to get new interviews and laid in new footage of the Red Sox's stunning come-from-behind victory in last year's playoffs and World Series. It's an awe-inspiring conclusion to this tale that for so long looked as though it would never have a happy ending. While St. Louis Cardinals fans may not rush to pick up this documentary, any and all fans of baseball will want to at least give a spin to this film detailing the unbelievable Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino.
The DVDThe Video:
Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino is offered in 1.33 fullscreen and looks solid. Taken from various sources, including vintage newsreel and TV footage, there are few inherent flaws in the source material but otherwise, the filmed portions look very smooth and free from any noticeable defects.
The Audio:Presented in Dolby 2.0 stereo, Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino offers clean, clear dialogue throughout. The majority of the film deals with TV broadcasts and talking head interviews and all are presented free of distortion.
The Extras:There isn't an extra to be found on Reverse of the Curse of the Bambino.
Final Thoughts:Boston Red Sox fans have probably already worn out a few copies of this documentary but other baseball fanatics will enjoy this candid, occasionally poignant look at one of the game's greatest stories. Recommended.
