The Series:

It's interesting to watch the careers of the stars of Jackass since the show disappeared from the airwaves of MTV. Johnny Knoxville has cleaned up a bit and gone Hollywood, while Bam Margera and Ryan Dunn have gotten their own show with Viva La Bam! which concentrates more on terrorizing Bam's parents than on the foul and crude antics of the show he was involved with a few years ago. Steve O is keeping it real though. He's not concerned about finding a wider audience, nor is he concerned about appealing to the masses. He and fellow Jackass alumni Chris 'Party Boy' Pontius have left behind their skateboards for safari hats and headed off to remote locations to interact and harass dangerous animals and play with poo and puke a lot. This, dear reader, is the genesis of Wildboyz.

Essentially in the eight episodes that make up the second season, Steve O and Chris make their way to India, Brazil, Kenya, Costa Rica, Australia, Florida, East Africa and Indonesia. When they arrive at their destination, they find the time to hang with an unusual assortment of natives and harass plenty of animals indigenous to the area. There's plenty of opportunity to make crass remarks, through dung at one another, enjoy animal farts, and to attempt such feats as fire walking, bungee jumping, and snake handling. There's also an eerie gay subtext to it all. Steve O and Chris are almost always running around with skimpy little loin clothes on and making genital references.

This Mondo Cane by way of The Village People travelogue/stunt show makes for interesting and very often quite hilarious viewing. These guys aren't afraid to put themselves in danger. Whether they're holding hands in a water tank with an electric eel capable of sending six hundred volts of electricity through them, whether Chris Pontius is wrestling a sloth bear, or whether Steve O is bungee jumping off of a massive bridge over top of a rough looking river below they're always up to the occasion and the results are predictably unpredictable.

Highlights of the series include Steve O trying to remove a group of snakes from a pit, Johnny Knoxville showing up and playing a winner of a practical joke on 'The Boyz', the licking of a man's deformed and downtrodden feet, and watching two dung beetles compete in a soccer match with a ball of poop substituting for the actual soccer ball. They play elephant polo in India, initiate themselves as men in a native tribe by wearing a glove on their hands filled with ants, and they drink the local booze of a tribe made by women spitting papaya into a gourd and burying it underground for two weeks. When they come across a tribe of gorillas, they dress up in banana suits and prance around the confused looking simians until one of them gets rather irate and they're chased into the brush.

While the sheer volume of poop and vomit in the series is pretty repulsive, Wildboyz does make for an interesting and hilarious take on reality TV. Steve O and Chris Pontius make for amusing tour guides through the strange world we live in, and half the time I'm not sure if we're supposed to be weirded out by the situations they're in or by the two men themselves. Either way, it works. It's funny stuff, and at times it's pretty interesting as well.

The DVD

Video:

The series is shot on digital video in sometimes rather unusual locations and under sometimes rather unusual conditions. As such, the video quality isn't perfect as a result of the source material being created under less than ideal circumstances. That being said, for the most part each of the episodes looks pretty good. Sure, there are moments when the lighting isn't perfect and things are a bit dark but that's the only real complaint I can make. The colors come through looking pretty strong and for something that was shot on video, there's a nice level of detail present throughout the entire set. Some mild edge enhancement is obvious in some scenes and there's a little bit of shimmering in a couple of spots but other than that, the video quality on this set is perfectly acceptable. Each of the episodes is slightly letterboxed (at approximately 1.78.1) but is not enhanced for 16x9 sets.

Sound:

The English language Dolby Digital 2.0 track is on par with the video for the same reason. Overall, the music and dialogue is clean and clear, though again, there are a couple of spots where the audio is a little low in the mix because of the shooting conditions. For the most part though, there aren't any real problems with the audio on this release. You can hear everything loud and clear and hiss and distortion are never a problem. There are no subtitles available, though there is an English language closed captioning feature.

Extras:

On the first disc there are optional commentaries available for each of the eight episodes. Present on all of the commentaries are stars Steve O and Chris Pontius, and on the episodes in which the guest star, Johnny Knoxville and Wee Man also appear on the commentaries. Series creators Jeff Tremaine and Dimitry Elyashkevich are also present throughout the tracks. To be honest, these tracks aren't all that informative. You're not going to be blown away with mind altering information or learn a whole lot about the animals, locations, or stunts that the series is made up of. However, these tracks are funny. Damn funny, in fact. There's a lot of goofing around and talking over one another but it is obvious that these guys enjoy what they do and have a good time working with one another. There's a lot of in jokes and good natured ribbing, as well as plenty of playful insults and squabbles. To sum it up, it's exactly what you'd expect from the participants.

On the second disc is where you'll find the bulk of the extra features. First up is roughly twenty minutes worth of deleted scenes from the eight episodes on the set. Also included with this is an additional thirty minutes worth out outtakes. Some of this material is pretty funny, some of it is just dumb but it's well worth sitting through it if you're a fan of the show as it's all in the same vein of humor as the material that made it into the versions that were broadcast. There's more goofing around with dangerous wild animals included in here, more stunts, and more joking around and plenty of crass humor.

Up next is a twenty minute making of featurette entitled Wildboyz Unclothed. This segment explores some of what happened behind the scenes during a few of the season's more remarkable moments. Included in here is candid and behind the scenes footage from segments such as Steve O's bungee jump, interaction with some of the more dangerous animals used on the show, and more. It's an interesting feature in that the two main stars don't really appear to be a whole lot different off camera than they do in front of it.

Rounding out the extra features are a bite list (which lists each time the two performers got bit by one of their furry co stars…. Steve O won), a trivia game, trailers for other Paramount TV sets, a still gallery, and the Wildboyz Encyclopedia.

Final Thoughts:

Wildboyz – The Complete Second Season is a lot of fun. Paramount has provided fans with nice looking and sounding episodes and plenty of good, entertaining extra features. While the humor and stunts will probably alienate a few people as they get pretty gross sometimes, for those with a taste for toilet humor and stupid antics (and I include myself in that group), this set comes highly recommended.
