The Show:

Midway through the second season of Galaxy Angel things are still running at a fast clip.  The Angels are given some more outrageous assignments, and get into more outrageous situations in the second volume of Galaxy Angels Z.

The Galaxy Angels are a special military unit that is charged with finding lost technology and helping out wherever they can. That means anything from battling giant monsters to running errands. The five angels are up for just about anything, 'cause if they don't complete a job, they'll suffer a horrible fate:  a pay cut.

With little plot and even less seriousness, this is a comedy show that moves at a fast pace.  Each of the six episodes on this disc run under fifteen minutes each, and so there's not a lot of time to set up the plot or go into characterization.  They jump right into the thick of things, often revealing major plot points (for that episode at least) in a single sentence:  "You forgot, Ranpha quit the team to get married."  This just adds to the show's humor.

These were a good set of strange episodes.  They Angels find their minds in other people's bodies, fighting a run-away military robot, and defending themselves from their mascot Normad whose out for revenge.  My favorite show has to be the second one on the disc, a parody of mecha shows.

Giant galactic monsters are attacking the city, and the only thing that could possibly stop them is a giant combining robot.  Unfortunately, there are five robot parts and only four Angels since Ranpha ran off to marry a rich industrialist.  (She won the honor in a lottery.)  Never willing to give up, especially when their pay check is on the line, they try to use Col. Volcott and Normad as replacements.  As their fight song is playing in the background, each of the Angels climbs onto her battle moped and drives off the side of a cliff.  (Which transforms the bike into a section of the robot.)  Then they combine....with disastrous results.

This is an irreverent that doesn't take itself seriously.  The girls are all one dimensional, the plots are almost nonexistent, and the situations are often unrealistic and silly, but this is still a fun show.  The jokes and comic situations are good for a few laughs in every episode, and that's what this show is about.

The DVD:

These six fifteen-minute shows come on a single sided DVD in a keep case.  There is an insert with a word search.

Audio:

Like most anime DVDs, this disc lets you watch the show in the original stereo Japanese with optional subtitles or with an English dub in stereo surround sound.  In switched back and forth each episode, and found that I enjoyed both sound tracks.  I have a slight preference for the Japanese, but only a slight one. The English voice actors did a good job.  They managed to match their dialog to the mouth movements, and didn't use any phony accents.

In both languages, there was some use of the front soundstage, mainly with sound effects.  The sound quality was very good, with a nice full rounded sound, especially during the opening song.  There was a good amount of bass present, and the dialog was clear and crisp.  No evidence of hiss or hums.  A nice quality sound track.

Video:

The video quality was also top-notch for this DVD. The colors are bright and the lines are crisp. There was only a slight hint of aliasing and other digital artifacts present. Hardly worth mentioning. The fine lines on the characters did not shimmer and disappear like they do on some discs. I was very happy with the look of these shows.

Extras:

Included on this DVD are introductions to each of the shows under the title Now I get it! GA Lectures. These were one-minute pieces where voice actress Ryoko Shintani who plays Milfeulle fills in the background to the show while dressed in a Galaxy Angel costume. There is no English dub on this bonus; they are in Japanese with subtitles. These were obviously done in one take, because Ryoko messes up a bit. But she seems to be having fun with it and is laughing much of the time. I thought these were fun and was very glad they included them on the DVD. I only wish there was an option to play them automatically before each show, as they were originally shown.

Final Thoughts:

This series is good light entertainment.  Nothing special or outstanding, just good wacky comedy.  If you need a break from more serious shows, this would be just the thing.  Recommended.
