The Movie:

Something Weird Video has long had a knack for digging up oddball cinematic gems and the DVD format has allowed them to combine two and sometimes three different features to kind of recreate the triple bills that used to play in grindhouse cinema's on 42nd St. in New York City and in drive-in's around the country before multiplexes and mall cinemas killed those unique movie going experiences. This latest release combines three bizarro vintage sex films for your viewing pleasure on one convenient and shiny platter – here's how it all pans out:

Vibrations

The lovely, and sexually free Julia has fallen on hard times and ends up moving in with her younger sister, Barbara, a woman who isn't so in tune (or in touch!) with her own physical wants and needs as Julia is. As Julia settles into her new abode, she's introduced to Mistress Georgia, the strange woman who lives next door and who masterminds all manner of kinky sex for the regular orgies that she hosts in her swinging pad. The more time that Julia spends in voyeuristic glee trying to familiarize herself with the neighbors hobbies, the more she gets into the scene and soon enough, that same new found enthusiasm starts changing Barbara's more rigid behavior as well.

Directed in 1969 with far more artistic flair than your average sexploitation film of the same era by the one and only Joseph Sarno (he also wrote it) of Swedish Wildcats and Veil Of Blood, this is an interesting film that plays as much with the psychology of the situation as it does with the wanton nudity required by the storyline. Yeah, there's plenty of naked ladies writing around under strange lighting conditions as seems to be mandatory for Sarno's films but at times it does seem like he was trying to get the audience into the two sisters' respective heads as they go through the life changing experiences that their naughty neighbor has to offer them.

The uncredited performers do fine with the material. No one is going to win an Oscar for the film but the character actors all suit their parts quite nicely, no one sticks out like they do in, say, in an Andy Milligan picture as truly out of place here. Mistress Georgia in particular is a stand out character with her incredible openness about her sexuality and her desires regardless of what social mores should society want to place upon her.

Fluctuations

This film from 1970 that was, according to the packaging, written, directed and produced by Leo J. Rhewdnal (His real name was Joel Landwehr – clever, huh? – and he also directed In Hot Blood) doesn't even try to make sense. There's really no storyline here at all, instead we're bombarded with a seemingly endless display of kinky sex. Girl on girl, three way fun, orgies, bondage, whipping and rough stuff all flash before our eyes and the filmmakers even throw in some really strange martial arts for no apparent reason, just to keep things interesting.

While much of the imagery is definitely cool in a dated and retro kind of way (isn't that half of the charm?), without any legitimate context to present it in the film is just a mess. Some very forced female narration occurs as a woman reads from her sexy story book to book-end the sex scenes but that's the only thing that the film even attempts to pass off as coherent.

This one might work if you want something on in the background for your next pervert party but if you're looking for a logical film, or even an illogical one in which something really happens to mark some sort of narrative progress, keep looking. It certainly is odd (the kung fu scene is great though truly too brief) but it isn't very good. The stock music soundtrack isn't overly original, but it is kind of fun.

Submission

Jennifer Welles of Is There Sex After Death? stars in this film from 1969 directed by Mr. Allen Savage and after watching this one, it shouldn't surprise you in the least that she went on to do full on hardcore because for a film that isn't XXX, her performance here comes damn close to true pornography. That's okay though – the movie is a blast!

Welles is Vicky, a kept woman who seems to be about as dumb as a post and who hangs out with her criminal boyfriend who dominates her in the bedroom and bosses her around everywhere else. Their scam is that they find work as live in maid and butler for whatever rich sucker than can get to bite, and then they rub'em out and snatch their loot before the cops know what went down. It's all very diabolical when you think about it, preying on people who truest you and all, but these two are sleazy and that's just how they work it.

Their latest target is an older woman but not an unattractive gal who just so happens to be a lesbian. Vicky's mind is obviously not what it used to be, that's if it ever was that great in the first place, and as things get stranger with her beaux her relationship with the lady becomes more intense until it finally crosses the line into a full fledged lesbian affair. Comfortable in the woman's arms, Vicky starts to think things over and soon realizes that she might not need her man around any longer what with her new found gig as a lesbian trophy wife.

Plenty of oddball steamy sex keeps this one interesting from start to finish. Hot wax, oral fun, rape, slapping, rough stuff, and candle humping are a few highlights but aside from that the film actually has a pretty decent storyline to go along with the raunch. You're not going to shed any tears at the end of the film, none of it is that involving, but once the movie starts to pick up about ten to fifteen minutes into it's short seventy-five minute running time you're not going to be able to shut it off.

The DVD

Video:

Each of these three black and white bad boys was shot fullframe and that's exactly how they're presented on this triple feature DVD. While the bit rate isn't through the roof with three films crammed on here, this trilogy of trash looks surprisingly good. Contrast levels are set nicely and the prints used for the transfer appear to have been in pretty decent shape as, although there is some mild print damage here and there, the picture is quite clean considering these were shot fast and cheap way back when. Mpeg compression artifacts are pretty much a non-issue and while there are a few instances of edge enhancement and line shimmering, there aren't a whole lot of digital conversion problems to report.

Sound:

The Dolby Digital Mono sound mix is pretty clear considering the low budget origins of the three older exploitation films presented on this DVD. While the limitations of the technology used to capture the audio shine through and the material does show its age with some mild hiss and the odd pop here and there, you aren't going to have any problems following the dialogue and some of the swanky background music used throughout the three films might just make you wanna get up move as its pretty catchy stuff.

Extras:

There are really only two extra features on this release, which might disappoint those accustomed to some of the earlier SWV discs that were chock full of bonus material, but hey, you get three movies on the disc instead of two so quite whining, you greedy pig.

First up is roughly seven minutes worth of deleted material from Submission. While this material isn't in as good a shape as the feature version of the film is, it's amazing that it exists at all. Most of the footage elaborates on material we see in the theatrical cut of the film but there is some sexier stuff in here that didn't make it into the final version, including some bonus dildo footatge. We all love bonus dildo footage, don't we?

Other than that, all we find is the Gallery Of Sick Sixties Sex Stills With Audio Oddities slide show set to music. This is a fun feature and I really enjoy seeing still gallery material done this way, but SWV have recycled it from one or two of their other releases so we're not getting any new material with this one.

Final Thoughts:

Vibrations/Fluctuations/Submission continues the Something Weird Video commitment to providing some of the most obscure and interesting exploitation films in top quality presentations. While more extras are always welcome, with three films on one disc there's little room to complain. Joseph Sarno fans should be delighted to have the excellent Vibrations on DVD, and Submission is almost as good. Fluctuations is just plain bad, but it has enough strange moments to make it worth a look – consider it the trashy icing on the cake. Recommended.
