Second Jungle Book, The
List Price: Unknown [Buy now and save at Amazon]
I expected, for some reason, to see a grand and glorious telling of Rudyard Kipling's "The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli and Baloo". But this Tri Star effort at recreating a kid's classic will only keep the youngest of viewers entertained.
The Second Jungle Book is the live action story of a jungle boy raised by wolves, Mowgli (Jamie Williams), who spends his days consorting with his animal pals (a panther, a bear, wolves and many others along the way). But his fortune takes a turn for the worse when he is discovered by Harrison (Bill Campbell), an employee of P.T. Barnum, who is convinced the boy would make a wonderful addition to the circus. But he is also discovered by a long lost uncle, Buldeo (Gulshan Grover), who wants the boy dead before he can claim his inheritance and send Buldeo to the poorhouse. Mowgli runs from Harrison and Buldeo and finds himself discovering an ancient city now occupied by the self proclaimed King of the Chimpanzees, King Murphy (Roddy McDowall). In the end, Mowgli manages to retain his freedom with the help of his animal friends and a newfound friend in Harrison.
This film is geared towards a very young audience. The story is bland and in some places rather boring for an adult. The story wanders into cute little episodes where animals and humans try to outwit each other for the sake of obtaining a few giggles from five-year-olds everywhere. Some of the special effects used to make the chimpanzees and Mowgli appear as though they are in the jungle are terrible but the clips are quick and therefore do not distract too much from the film. The usual things like subtitles, widescreen option, talent files and trailers are provided but those things will hold little interest for a child who just wants to see the furry animals doing funny, furry animal things.
If you've got a couple of extra bucks and you want to sit your under 10-year-old children down for a couple of hours, go ahead and rent "The Second Jungle Book: Mowgli and Baloo". But don't join them for, like me, you'll find yourself dosing off or becoming wrestles.
