Movie: Whatever else people might say about Hugh Hefner and his publishing empire Playboy, the man opened up a lot of doors for sexual freedom and expression by virtue of his vision. Fifty years later, his magazine is a shadow of its former influence due to the multitude of competitors that have chiseled away at its market share but folks still find the appeal of Hefner's style worth looking into. Good old Hef' promoted a lifestyle that many men wished they could partake in and many women came to see as okay too; in stark contrast to the "good girls don't…" attitude that he fought for years. Even though his influence has diminished though, he still influences the conversation of sexual politics and social mores routinely and a great many women seem to think that posing for the magazine is not only acceptable, but desirable as the airbrushes, implants, and other tricks of the trade convert moderately attractive women into household fantasies. In a day and age of hardcore porn being so prevalent, Playboy still seems popular with such titles as Playboy: Girls of McDonalds selling a lot of copies over material that is far more explicit. Today's review of Playboy's Hottest Housewives takes a look at the latest volume in the series, focusing on married women a bit older than is usually the case for the company, showing the appeal of the mundane to those who appreciate the more attainable gals over the sex goddess' it typically revels in.

The DVD could've been more appropriately titled The MILF's of Playboy, referring to the pop culture term standing for "Mothers I'd Like to Fuck". The general approach of the DVD was to show a series of gals (listed below) giving interviews and posing in various states of undress with a lot of time spent on the gals getting their makeup done. Most of the women had plastic surgery in the form of implants and tattoos (some of which were poorly covered up) but only a few of them were less than expected in terms of sexual appeal. I think a lot of guys that "enjoyed" the pictorial in the magazine will find this set of clips to be a little too much of a disruption of the fantasy as the women typically needed tons of war paint, enhancing lighting, and camera angles to look as good as they did. The gals in order were: Wendy Drinkwater (31), Angi Yangas (25), Laura Grillo (25), Tamara Martinez (31), Cristina Bazan (33), Angie Marton (24), Heidi Hanson (24), Tami Paz (35), Kathy Sander (37), Loree Bischoff (43), Sondra Holloway (31), and Michelle Baena (32).

The shoots were also overdone with loud music and almost all of the women seemed to be at least somewhat older (in a few cases, a LOT older) then their stated ages but I doubt that'd impact their desirability to most fans nearly as much as some of the comments they made (from those thinking it would help their career, others pissed off about their marriages, to various clueless statements as they offered tips to men. I suppose it makes sense that most of them had elevated senses of self worth given that they were posing for a men's magazine but I'd strongly suggest you turn off the audio track if you're looking to use the DVD to pleasure yourself. I think the show also could prove invaluable to women wondering what it takes to look like a "Playboy girl". Unlike other releases in the series, the women seemed a lot more like strippers and porn stars due to their looks than usual.

I know a lot of people like Playboy (I have fond memories of the magazine going back into the mid 1970's) so if you've seen any of the company's other releases on DVD and liked them, this wasn't far off the mark. I like MILF's as much as anyone and a couple of the gals seemed pleasant but I'd probably rather see the show spend more time with a really top notch woman or two than breeze through a dozen or more. This is a common criticism since the average scene lasted around five minutes and spent as much time on the behind the scenes material as the gal posing (if not more). It was fluffy and okay for those unwilling to watch more erotic or hardcore material (still spending too much time on the junk and too little time on the posing) so I'm going to rate it as an acceptable Rent It if you're into this kind of limited show. Playboy's no longer cutting edge, outside the norm of society, or anything close to as erotic as it used to be but I can see why the magazine and video releases have an audience even now. Just don't expect a lot from this one and you may find it slightly interesting.

Picture: Playboy's Hottest Housewives was presented with a choice of either a 1.33:1 ratio full frame version or a non-anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1 version. There really wasn't a lot of use of the widescreen format here though I couldn't tell if it was shot in full frame and cropped to the widescreen version here. The colors of the show looked oversaturated and much like a behind the scenes feature from one of the second tier porn companies. Perhaps it was the editing or the desire to show the photoshoot as a cold version of the pictures that were presented in the magazine but the DVD's purpose is not like that of most adult material so your mileage will vary a great deal. There was some grain due to lighting but there didn't seem to be any compression artifacts.

Sound: The audio was presented in 2.0 Dolby Digital English. It was a basic track and the music appeared to be the only aspect that had any separation between the channels. The dynamic range was very limited with generic music offered up throughout the scenes.

Extras: The extras here took the form of two extra profiles; one for 42 year old Karen Lister and the other for Tasha Christensen, the 43 year old brunette on the front DVD cover. They both lasted under 5 minutes and had the same interview edited into a photoshoot style the series is known for; spending much of the time on trying to convince the viewer that their decision to participate in the venture was liberating and a positive boost to their self image. They came off as fun loving and appealing; making their roles here seem in tune with the revised Playboy philosophy that older women can be attractive too. There was also a short Behind the Scenes feature with a few photographers trying to shoot the cover for the magazine cover the Housewives edition centered on and a photogallery.

Final Thoughts: Playboy's Hottest Housewives was fairly representative of the so-called "new" Playboy in that it used women that were almost all surgically enhanced and somewhat needy of attention and/or an ego boost. I've seen the pictorial online and some of the gals looked much better in print so watching this DVD could ruin the fantasy some of you have built up around their participation in the show. Otherwise, if you're looking for a set of MILF's posing in front of a camera while talking about something or other, it'll work better for you than it did for me. The Playboy Empire may not be the shining bastion of sexual freedom it used to be but for those of you who like the light-core type of porn where older women are being put in front of the camera for your fantasy; this isn't the worst choice on the market. If you're looking for stroke material though, use the magazine instead.
