Newlyweds - Nick & Jessica: Final Season

The Movie:
It's a little sad and a little strange to watch this final season of "Newlyweds", which arrives on DVD shortly after the stars have broken up - a break-up that came after a wave of press from the couple that everything was going okay. Despite the fact that both Nick and Jessica seemed to visibly get on each other's nerves over the course of the immensely popular MTV series, one could still see that there was affection between the two, at least in the first half.
This final season of the series sees, in terms of what's shown on TV, the relationship chipping away a bit, as the two seem a bit less close and a bit more snippy towards one another (see an early moment in the "Orange Bowl" episode, where Nick is trying to deal with plans and Jessica wholly and completely ignores him mid-sentence.)
In a finale that seemed amusingly far from reality, the two prepare to move out of their house (which, despite Jessica's success, still seems like the house that Nick built, given the work he's done on it over the couple of years, such as the moment in "Orange Bowl", where Nick builds a recording studio in-house as a surprise for Jessica, who doesn't seem very appreciative) and we get the two sitting around, recalling different moments from over the years, which we see in flashback. The other moment that rings false (or at least like "selective reality") is in the "Orange Bowl" episode, where Ashlee Simpson's infamous performance is never shown.
The final season offers some highlights, including an episode where Jessica is told that she's neglected her teeth to the point that she needs a root canal. After the initial appointment, she goes home and eats a cake with frosting. She also goes way over budget after agreeing that she and Nick would also spend $20 on each other in "Valentine's Day Budget." Throughout the show, there have been several instances of fans coming up to Nick and instead of asking him for his autograph, ask, "Where's Jessica?" This happens again in the Halloween episode. There's also "Training Daisy", which has Nick being practically yelled at by the dog trainer. This season, which sees the two on their own for a good chunk of time (with Jessica filming "Dukes of Hazzard"), isn't up to the prior seasons, but it still offers some moments.

The DVD
VIDEO: Newlyweds" is presented by Paramount in 1.33:1 full-frame, the show's original broadcast aspect ratio. The picture quality is generally very good, although some inconsistencies occasionally come up due to the different cameras or lighting. Sharpness and detail are mostly first-rate, as the picture looked as crisp and clear as it did during broadcast on local digital cable.
The only flaw encountered during viewing was some minor shimmering. No compression artifacts were spotted, and some noise at times was likely due to different camera/lighting. No edge enhancement or other concerns were seen. Colors appeared bright, natural and well-saturated, with no problems.
SOUND: "Newlyweds" is presented in 2.0 audio by Paramount. Dialogue seemed crisp and clear, as did background sounds.
EXTRAS: The second disc offers a "behind-the-scenes" featurette that looks at the overall series, as well as the crew members who work on the show. There's also "Good, Bad and the Mess-Ups" featurette and "Newlyweds Moments".
Final Thoughts: Unfortunately for the two, the closing chapter of "Newlyweds" ended up essentially being the final chapter of Nick and Jessica's marriage. The season isn't quite as entertaining as the prior two, as the two are split apart for long periods and, when they are together, there are moments when they seem less close. Paramount's DVD edition provides fine audio/video quality, as well as a nice helping of supplements. Recommended for fans.
