Lake Placid

Synopsis: Hidden away in a secluded part of Maine lies a body of water known as black lake. Quiet & serene, it's the home to wildlife of every ilk...that is, until the newest resident moved in. A 150 year old 30 foot crocodile has taken up residence in the lake & is eating everything & everyone it can get it's jaws around. With an eccentric Crocodile worshipper, a New York palentologist, a bumbling local sheriff, a foul mouthed Betty White & the Department of Fish & Game, this is sure to be an adventure unlike any other! First, they have to prove it exists. next they have to catch it or kill it...if they can! So, grap your trunks & take a dip in the shockingly good, murky waters of Lake Placid.

Audio: 5.1 digital soundtrack that puts your home theater to work.

Video: While it is not an anamorphic transfer of the film, it's widescreen presentation is beautiful nonetheless. Extras: Three Tv spots, Trailer, Featurette & cast & crew Bios.

Overall: The summer of 1999 saw at least two "Nature gone bad" films. Deep Blue Sea with it's 45 foot sharks & Lake Placid, with it's 30 foot Crocodile. I have to admit, I thought this movie would suck absolutely, no questions asked but, boy was I wrong! Oliver Platt, provides absolute comic relief in a film that doesn't take itself too seriously. The special effects are done quite well & the storyline though improbable was quite enjoyable. It's mindless fun! With a 30 foot Croc eating everything & Betty White's out of character, character,& Brendan Gleesan's comical Sheriff, you can't help but enjoy this movie. This is probably the most underrated film of the summer. If you are looking for shakespeare, look elsewhere, but if you are looking for great thrills, chills & laughs then Lake Placid is the one for you. The only real problem with the film other than it's lack of anamorphic transfer is the price. It's retailing for $35. That is a ridiculous price for any disc outside of a Criterion SE version. I got mine for $21. If you shop around, I'm sure you can find it cheaper.
