The Movies

It's a stout double shot of chick flickery as Sony continues its shameless repackaging ways, offering up My Best Friend's Wedding and The Wedding Planner, a pair of time-tested romantic comedies in what's billed as a "Wedding Double Feature." The absurdly low MSRP mitigates the sting for those who might not have yet picked up either of these movies but if you already own either DVD (or both), feel comforted knowing you're not missing a thing by leaving this set on the shelf. The films are housed in separate thinpaks, slid snugly inside a very pink slipcase adorned with images from both films.

My Best Friend's Wedding
Gifted with a charismatic cast and enough neat twists on tried and true genre cliches to keep the proceedings from becoming unbearable, director PJ Hogan's brisk, charming Julia Roberts vehicle is an effervescent treat that features great work from Cameron Diaz, Rupert Everett, Dermot Mulroney and of course, the ever-luminous Roberts. I'll skip summarizing the film's plot (for that, check out my colleague Aaron Beierle's review of My Best Friend's Wedding) but I will tell you that this set features the previously released special edition from 2001.

The Wedding Planner
Released at the height of J. Lo mania, director Adam Shankman utilizes Jenny from the block to surprisingly great effect in this goofily sweet-natured romp. Jennifer Lopez stars as Mary Fiore, a wedding planner at the top of her game, who shares practically combustible chemistry with Dr. Steve Edison (Matthew McConaughey) – I'll skip summarizing the film's plot (you can find an excellent example of that in my colleague Aaron Beierle's review of The Wedding Planner) but will say that Sony is re-releasing the same DVD as it did in 2001.

The DVDs

The Video:

My Best Friend's Wedding
Presented in a very clean, serviceable 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, My Best Friend's Wedding looks pretty spot-on; there aren't any major defects or flaws detracting from the image and skin tones look great throughout.

The Wedding Planner
As befits a recently released film, The Wedding Planner's 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is blemish-free and fairly sharp – the eye-popping wedding ceremonies, the lush San Francisco locations and Lopez's glowing visage all look terrific.

The Audio:

My Best Friend's Wedding
Offered in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby 2.0 stereo, the soundtrack for My Best Friend's Wedding pops into life occasionally, but mostly keeps to giving full, robust life to the fast-moving dialogue and karaoke sessions. English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean and Thai subtitles are included.

The Wedding Planner
Dolby Digital 5.1 is the audio option of choice here – save for occasional score fills or brief ambient effects, the surrounds are largely silent throughout, leaving the front speakers to accurately convey the cute dialogue and pop songs. English, French and Spanish subtitles are included.

The Extras:

My Best Friend's Wedding
There's not much in the way of supplemental material here, but I suppose it's better than nothing: the 15 minute, fullscreen making-of featurette "Unveiled: 'My Best Friend's Wedding'" is pretty basic while "On The Set," a 19 minute, fullscreen making of featurette manages to impart similar information a little bit differently. "Wedding Do's and Don'ts" is a four minute, 30 second "retro" promo for wedding preparations while "My Best Friend's Wedding Album" is a seven minute, 30 second photo gallery that details the production, there's a "Say a Little Prayer For You" sing-along with trailers for My Best Friend's Wedding, It Could Happen To You and About Last Night... also included.

The Wedding Planner
Director Shankman and writers Pamela Falk and Michael Ellis contribute a laid-back commentary track and Shankman also contributes optional commentary to seven deleted scenes. "The Dancer and The Cowboy" is a two minute, 55 second fullscreen featurette that explores the Lopez/McConaughey dance sequence and trailers for The Wedding Planner, U-Turn, My Best Friend's Wedding and Anaconda are on board.

Final Thoughts:

The double shot of My Best Friend's Wedding and The Wedding Planenr might be a bit much for the romcom-phobic, but since they are both above average entries into the chick flick genre, if you don't own any of these films, this low-priced set would be a great way to add them to your collection. Recommended.
