Love Potion #9

Movie:
Love Potion #9, originally released in 1992, was written and directed by Dale Launer. Inspired by the hit song, the films stars Tate Donovan (Paul Matthews) and Sandra Bullock (Diane Farrow), with Anne Bancroft (Madame Ruth) and Adrian Paul (Enrico) in supporting roles.

Paul's love life is basically non-existent, as he's a biochemist with no style. One weekend with his friends, he consults a palm-reader, Madame Ruth. Madame Ruth reveals that she sees no women in his future and, feeling sorry for him, provides him with a solution – Love Potion #8. A single drop mixed with water and ingested will attract the opposite sex for four hours when the person speaks. Skeptical at first, Paul and Diane, a comparative animal psychobiologist, run some tests on the potion and verify it works on animals. They then decide to test the potion on humans; each of them will conduct their own "research." The potion helps them attract the opposite sex as well as regain their confidence, and they soon discover that they both have feelings for the other. But when the potion falls into the wrong hands, Paul risks losing Diane forever. Desperate to get her back, he again approaches Madame Ruth, who gives him Love Potion #9…but will it be enough for Paul to get Diane back?

Love Potion #9 is a lighthearted romantic-comedy film that I enjoyed quite a bit. Sandra Bullock, in one of her first movies, is simply fantastic and her transformation from geeky scientist to babe is quite believable – its no wonder that she did it again in Miss Congeniality. Donovan has most of the best scenes in the movie and the two of them seem to work well together. The film does lose a bit of steam going into the second half, but the film remains entertaining throughout.

Picture:
Love Potion #9 is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. The transfer is, on the whole, quite good, though it's not without a few flaws. There is some slight grain, a few specks, and some shimmer in a couple of scenes. The film also seems a bit too soft occasionally. Colors, though, are terrific and quite vibrant. Flesh tones are accurate throughout and blacks are rich.

Sound:
Love Potion #9 is presented in a Dolby Surround 4.0 track as well as a Dolby Surround 2.0 track, both of which are in English. The 4.0 track is definitely the way to go, as it sounds much more full. However, the surrounds are basically used for the film's terrific music; rarely is there any directionality. As with most comedies, the film is driven exclusively by dialogue, and it is crisp and clean throughout. Subtitles are also available in English and Spanish.

Extras:
Extras include a "featurette," the film's TV spot, and trailers for this film, The Beach, French Kiss, Hope Floats, Never Been Kissed, and Prelude to a Kiss. I was really disappointed by the featurette, as it is really nothing more than an extended trailer with a few comments from the cast and some glimpses behind the scenes thrown in to extend it to little more than three and a half minutes in length.

Summary:
Fans of the film should be pleased, as Fox has given the film a great transfer and a decent sound mix; however, it is disappointing that there weren't more extras. Fans of Bullock or Donovan who haven't seen the film before should definitely consider giving the film a try, as it's a comedy with a lot of charm. Recommended!
