The Movie:

There's nothing I like more than a good stand-up comedy performance, but when you've watched so many of them, you tend to want something new, something different. There's so many topics that have just been played out over the years - how women are different from men or how blank is different than blank. The best stand-ups get into the absurdity of the little things of everyday life and combine insightful, sharp material with their own unique delivery (Lewis Black, for example.)

Jeff Cesario is one of the producers of TV's "Last Comic Standing", "The Larry Sanders Show" and "Dennis Miller Live" and had a writing gig on the latter two shows. The first show may not exactly be the best bit of resume material to convince that the stand-up is funny, but thankfully, the performance here sells itself pretty well.

While Cesario's performance may not rank up with some of the best stand-up efforts I've seen in the past few years, it definitely offers some big laughs at a pretty consistent rate, which is all one can really ask for. Starting off with a bit about how guns are available at Wal-Mart, yet one has to practically transport sparklers over state lines, the comic hits on a variety of topics, including a large chunk on marriage ("If you ever see a guy walking away from his wife at the mall, it's because he is farting. It's not because he found something cool at Banana Republic." and "I knew she was right for me because we drove across country and...we made it.")

Other topics that Cesario goes over include sports (a funny bit about switching golf and hockey announcers), Wisconsin, using leaf blowers for things you can pick up, failing Spanish class and more. There's a few little spots here where the jokes don't go over as well, but even at the worst, Cesario's material still cracks a smile.

This edition is the "unrated" edition apparently, but it also seems like the only edition, and the box doesn't offer any details about what's "unrated" about the program.

The DVD

VIDEO: "You Can Get..." is presented by Goldhil Home Entertainment in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. Apparently shot in hi-def video, the presentation quality is generally quite good for a stand-up performance. Sharpness and detail remain very good throughout, with both close-up shots and wide shots looking crisp and well-defined, if not razor sharp.

No edge enhancement is spotted, but a couple of tiny traces of pixelation were spotted in the background a few times. The minimal colors of the background looked nicely saturated and without faults.

SOUND: The Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation offered crisp and clear dialogue aside from - understandably - the few times Cesario moved away from the mic.

EXTRAS: About 9 minutes of deleted scenes (how Cesario was surprised to see a woman both smoking and sun-tanning, taxes, spring break and more) are mainly little extended/deleted bits that include some discussion with the off-camera director about how the show is going.

Final Thoughts: It may be badly titled (it really doesn't give you an idea of what kind of material this is), but Cesario's stand-up program is definitely one of the funnier ones I've come across lately. The material is mostly clever, and Cesario has crisp comic timing. The DVD offers fine audio/video quality, but $14.95 seems like a bit much for just a little over an hour worth of material. Definitely a recommended rental for those seeking out a very fine stand-up show.
