Retroactive
List Price: Unknown [Buy now and save at Amazon]
"Retroactive", a film unfortunately caught in the death throes of Orion Pictures, takes the typical action "cat and mouse hunt" movie and adds an interesting twist. Karen Warren is a hostage negotiator returning home after a very disheartening experience in Chicago. She has a bit of car trouble and finds herself at the mercy of a psychopath. The twist is the addition to time travel into the mix after Karen stumbles upon a research facility. "Retroactive" focuses on Karen's numerous attempts to prevent the deaths of everyone around her. Although this plot sounds a bit ridiculous, it's handled rather well and never seems overly fantastic. Karen is intelligently written and a strong female lead, which is always welcome, and Belushi has a lot of over-the-top fun as Frank, even if his acting is a bit hammy at times. "Retroactive" is an action movie that manages to be engaging and intelligent at the same time.
Video: The transfer is amazing -- completely crisp and clear without any film grain or compression artifacts whatsoever. Although letterboxed (2.35:1), "Retroactive" is not enhanced for widescreen televisions.
Audio: As is the case with most action DVDs, the sound is very impressive. I did notice a bit of distortion around the 50 minute mark, and there are some poorly done overdubs throughout, but those are likely problems with the source material.
Extras: Aside from the theatrical trailer, there really aren't any extras to be found.
Conclusion: "Retroactive" is a very entertaining action movie, but for some reason, it seems more like a USA Original Movie than a theatrical blockbuster. At no point did I feel like fast forwarding or skipping chapters, but I can't really see myself wanting to watch "Retroactive" more than once. I do recommend it as a rental or as a purchase if you can get it at an incredibly good price, but there are so many great movies out there that I'd have a hard time strongly recommending this one.
