Body Snatchers

"Body Snatchers", the latest in the series of adaptations of the classic novel that seem to appear every couple of decades, gives the classic tale of silent dominance from a camoflauged enemy an angsty '90s spin with somewhat disappointing results. I loved the mood that was set in the previous versions, and that odd creepiness is almost totally lacking. Instead, we're treated with a dysfunctional family as the center (in particular, a stereotypical gloomy teenage girl), lots of pyrotechnics, and some slimey alien effects. It's not really a horror movie, and there's not much in the way of sci-fi elements -- it's a muddled, if watchable, mess that will have fans reaching for the '54 and '78 releases.
Video: The anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer looks rather nice, although the colors always seem a bit off. The print is clean for the most part, although it does get a little rough at times.
Audio: A 5.1 audio track isn't included, and the 2.0 track we're left with isn't all that wonderful. It's does the job, but when things really start going well into the movie, some of the dialogue gets buried. I prefer it when audio really draws me into the movie, and that simply doesn't happen here.
Extras: Nothing.
Conclusion: I wouldn't bother. "Body Snatchers" is an unexceptional movie on an unexceptional disc. Both the '54 and '78 versions are available on DVD, and you'll be far better off checking out one of those.
